| Pending updates but no yellow shield in tray.. Hi, In XP (sp2), auto updates settings are set to "Download updates for me, but let me choose when to install them". When I restart or shut down my computer, I can see the shield attached to the "shut down" button, indicating that there are pending updates. Despite this, there is not "yellow shield" in the notification area that would allow me to see the updates list and choose wether I want to install them or not. I tried to restart my computer or shut it down without installing the updates, at no avail : once restarted, no yellow shield is shown. Is there any way to cure/work around this problem ? Thanks. |

Patience... Or not. http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ Custom scan for updates, install the critical, choose throughout the optional and ignore the hardware device drivers. -- Shenan Stanley MS-MVP -- How To Ask Questions The Smart Way http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html |

The problem started at least five days ago. Is that enough patience ? ;-) I'm not in an urge to apply the patches and don't see the need to search and download them again since they are already downloaded. I'm just looking for a way to correct the problem preventing me to see the pending updates list. |

Most likely they're still being downloaded; be patient, let the machine do the work. Leave it on for a day and see if it'll finish the download. |

I'd like to be able to see the pending updates, which up until a week or so ago I was able to do by clicking the yellow shield on my tray. I now see the default option is to install the updates when I shut down, but the yellow shield no longer appears. I have to click elsewhere in order to shut down without installing the updates. I have updates set to download automatically but let me specify when to install them. Bill |

The second option worked for me; I didn't try the first one. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/943144 Bill |
