I have a Dell Dimension 8200 computer with windows XP Pro (SP2) installed
and with all of the current MS Security updates as well. Up until a few day
ago, was able to use the Windows Media player without any problems. I
should
note that version 9.0.03250 is installed on my computer.

A friend sent me a copy of DVD of a recent reunion he attended. Copies were
also sent to other friends and they have been able to view the DVD.
However, when I install the DVD in either the Plextor burner 760A or the NEC
DV 5800A units on my computer, and after clicking on the applicable drive
icon, the windows media player will open normally, but then shortly
thereafter, I see the following
error message: "Windows Media Player has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." If I click on the "more
information" in that error message, I will see the following error message:
Error signature AppName wmplayer.exe AppVer 9.0.03250 ModName:
clvsd.ex ModVer. 3.5.0.814 Offset 00039f48."

I should note that the DVD has three folders: Audio - no files listed;
Show_1, has numerous files all with the .jpg extensions; and Video_TS, five
files with various extensions .bup, .ifo, and .vob. Also it was noted that
the file system was UDF and the total size of the three folders was 874MB.

I accomplished a Goggle but did not find any applicable help. Any help
would be very much appreciated. Thanks, Sam.

WMP 9/10 cannot play DVD-video without additional software support. That
additional support can be either an MPEG2 decoder plug-in for WMP, or an
alternative software DVD-Video player such as 'PowerDVD' (in the latter case
you then have a choice of using either 'PowerDVD' or WMP for video playback.

The cheapest route is the former option (just add a plugin to WMP). See here:

"clvsd.ax" (CyberLink Video/SP Filter) coming along with the "PowerDVD"
software in most cases. Did you try out if "PowerDVD" works correctly?

I have experienced the same problem (error message) caused by the
"Elecard MPEG2 Video Decoder". After removing, the problem was resolved.

That's why you should run "PowerDVD" for testing purposes. If it doesn't
run due to an error in the same module (clvsd.ax), Media Player won't
run either.

You can remove that decoder only when installed. When not installed, you
cannot remove it. When there is another DVD Decoder installed instead
(you should know), remove that second decoder if applies.

First, find the path of the files "clvsd.ax" and "claud.ax". Next, re-
register the DVD Decoder (replace the path accordingly):
Start > Run: REGSVR32 Path\clvsd.ax
Start > Run: REGSVR32 Path\claud.ax

Now make sure that this decoder will be used:
Start > Run: dvdupgrd.exe /detect

If this doesn't help or if there are error messages during these steps,
remove "PowerDVD" and re-install. Note that this application may not be
re-installed since your version is somewhat outdated. Therefore, you
should copy the two files "clvsd.ax" and "claud.ax" to a safe place
prior to this action.
