I am about to do a reinstallation of my system with XP and would like to
clarify two issues.

I suppose you can still transfer a valid license for XP from one PC to a new
build?

Also, I have read different opinions on how to install. My CD is going back
to before XP2. So I will have to download XP2 and all updates since then. I
have seen advice stating this should be done via windows update and other
advice linking to WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe (Windows XP Service Pack 2
Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers) with the
advantage of being able to install XP and the service patch offline,
obviously minimising the risk of being exposed to the net during the initial
stages of installations.

So, which is the better way?

The better way is to slipstream the SP2 download with your original CD, burn
a new CD, and then install XP. Google slipstreaming for info and procedures.
If you can find it AutoStreamer is software that will help accomplish the
process.

You can transfer the Windows XP License *if* it is not an OEM license type
and is a FULL Retail license type. Yes.

The cleanest way to get SP2 installed for a clean installation -
integrate/slipstream it into your installation media so it is there from the
start.

Thanks -this info is very useful and the links helpful but I am not sure I
trust myself to do this.

If I stick with the step by step (Windows Update) procedure, is my PC
vulnerable during the process? I don't mind if things take a bit longer but
I don't want to mess things up or risk getting hacked or infected while still
in the process of installation?

Do you have a router with a hardware firewall? If so, nothing to worry
about. If not, install SP2 offline. Download it and burn it to a CD.
Either that or do the slipstream method.

If you have a retail license, yes. OEM licenses are not transferable.

You'd save quite a bit of time by slipstreaming SP2 into your original
CD's installation files and creating a new installation CD.
