Everytime I put a blank CD into my CD drive, my computer gives me the BSOD
with teh following error message - Stop: 0x0000008E (0XC0000005, 0X806EE753,
0XB85373BC, 0X00000000).

I have tried using Media player 11, rolled back to 10, Real Player and
Winamp but my PC just gives me the BSOD everytime it tries to read the blank
CD. I have tried to update the driver but it says that no new drivers are
present. I have tried to roll back but it says no previous driver installed.
I have searched for this error message everywhere and still can't find a
reason!!

It used to work fine with no problems at all and I have also tried multiple
discs but to no avail! I've not installed anything else to do with the CD
drive neither! Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Hi, sorry no, no resolution as yet. Annoying thing is, I tried it again and
it worked and then the next time crashed and gave the same error message. The
times I got it to work, I queued all the songs up and pressed burn before I
put a CD in and that seemed to work. If I put the CD in first it crashes!

Might be worth a try!!

I cant figure this one out either and have been on numerous discussion groups
to get a resolution, it may be worth a shot but i got it to work once when i
turned off my AV software currently running Norton 360 It worked once but
then crashed again. so back to square one. I also find that if i place my cd
in the pc at a certain point after the boot sequence then when it has
finished booting i can burn normally. i am begining to think that there is a
hardware conflict someewhere but cant work it out, hope you get it sorted and
any info on a resolution would be great. Thx for your help

Here's the description, but it's little help, if any.

Try removing the device from Device Manager, restart and have the
drivers reinstalled. That can help if the drivers were corrupted for
some reason.

Locate this Registry Key:

Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the

I'm having a similar problem with my CD and DVD disk drives. When I
insert a blank disk to start burning something the computer crashes. I
get a stop error message with a blue screen which says that windows
has been closed down to protect your computer. The computer then
proceeds to re-boot and when the desktop appears I get a message which
says that your computer has recovered from a serious error and I get
the usual option to report this to Microsoft. When I try to repeat the
process the same thing happens again. Strangely enough the disk can
read CDs and DVDs with something already on them.

You suggest, removing the device from Device Manager, restart and have
the drivers reinstalled.

Will the drivers be installed as part of the restart process or will I
have to install them from somewhere else. The only disk I have is the
recovery disk supplied with the computer, will they be on that or will
I have to download them from a website?

The disk drives are;

SONY CD-RW CRX230ED
SONY DVD RW DW-D22A

Any help would be appreciated

The drivers should be available in the Windows\i386 folder, or a drivers
folder, and loaded automatically. You're just reinstalling when you
reboot to replace any damaged driver.

Thanks for the quick response. So I remove the devices and re-boot and
the drivers will be loaded automatcally?
How do I remove the devices using the device manager?

Step by step would be good as I'm a bit of a novice.

- Open Device Manager. Do that by pressing Windowskey/Break key
together. Click Hardware tab, click Device Manager.
- Locate DVD/CD-ROM drives, click the + to the left.
- Right-click each device, click Uninstall.

If a device isn't reinstalled, the OEM site should provide a driver for
the device.

Hi Elmo
I did what you suggested and removed the entries from my registry and hey
guess what it works and no more burning problems. great!!! now the bad news
everytime i start iTunes it reports an error saying the registry values are
not recognised for importing or burning discs within iTunes please re-install
iTunes. I have not done this as yet because i am wary that it may start the
whole problem again. Due yo think this may be a conflict between iTunes and
windows media???? never had it before.....suggestions are welcome or do i
bite the bullet and intsall iTunes again and hope for the best..... yours in
hope

It sure reads like a conflict between the two.. But I would reinstall
and see if they cooperate with each other. You can always correct it
again with the same registry change. You could export the two entries
and name them accordingly, registering the one needed for a particular
program to work. That could keep you going till an update in one of the
programs lets them play well together again.
