| RE: Remote assistance Success, we finally did it. The first thing you need to do is download IP2.ZIP (free) from http://keir.net/ip2.html and run it on the comp. that will be sending the invitation (Novice). IP2 will give you both the LAN & WAN IP address'. The invitation always contains the LAN IP address ,,,, if the LAN & WAN IP's are the same, it will work as is. If they are different it will not work. The IP address you must have in the invitation is the WAN address, so, you have to edit the invitation and change the LAN address to the WAN address. If you have a Static IP set up or are behind a Router the LAN & WAN will be different and the Invitation must be edited. Some experts will tell you that you MUST have a Static IP address, this is not necessarily true, as long as you are logged on to the Internet when you create the invitation and do not log off or re-boot before the Expert initiates the invitation. If the sending comp. (Novice) is behind a Router (not a Modem), then you must set up Port Forwarding for Port 3389. To help you do this go to http://portforward.com/routers.htm , find your router in the long list and click on it, this will take you to a long list of programs & games to set up port forwarding for, find "Remote Desktop" and click on it (it also uses port 3389), you will be taken to the set up page for your router. Follow instructions to the letter. NOTE: before doing all this, you will need the Make & Model for your router plus your Username & Password (access code) & the IP address for the router. Should be on bottom of router. After setting up Port Forwarding, rerun IP2 and record the WAN IP address. Create an invitation to the Expert and save it to your HD, open it in Notepad and check the IP address it contains ,,,, if necessary change it to the WAN address.(and Save it) Now you can attach the invitation to an e-mail and send it to the Expert.
