Hi,

i just wanted to check. Using Windows XP Backup - can I boot from the floppy
disk and restore my PC to working order using a System State backup?

Thanks

Sort of. But you don't boot from the floppy, you boot from the XP CD and
press F2.

You'll be asked for the diskette, and XP Setup will then start by formatting
the partition.

You must have the system backup on some recognised media, which sure won't
be the floppy.

Well, no. What you need to be able to do is boot to windows and run
ntbackup and do the restore - the restore will be to the copy of windows
you are running. So, if your machine becomes unbootable then the backup
won't help you.

There is an XP ntbackup feature called ASR - Automated System Recovery,
look it up in Help and Support. What it does is make a full system backup
and allows that to be run standalone from the CDs you create (thru the XP
Setup CD). Note it only works w/ XP PROFESSIONAL, not XP HOME.

There are lots of backup methods out there, and stratigies to using them.
If interested then do your research, google is your friend. And yes, it
can be duanting...

Acronis and Retrospect are two well respected products.

Good Luck.
