| sfc /scannow When I try to run this, I get a message asking for my XP Professional CD - I have XP Home installed. Will the necessary files be on that CD? I have googled sfc /scannow and printed off the other ways to copy the files but the CD would be easier! |

| Re: sfc /scannow It depends on what version CD you have. An original release is called a "Gold" version, any embedded Service Packs will be shown on the face of the CD-ROM, such as Service Pack 1 or 2. When XP is installed a Registry Key is set for whether XP was originally installed from a CD or other source. Depending on what Service Pack is applied changes how XP performs a SFC. A Service Pack not only updates the Operating System files but also re-populates the \DllCache folder and saves itself to a \ServicePackFiles in a i386 sub-folder. When you call SFC /Scannow the utility searches through a hierarchy of folders looking for the appropriate files. Most times the Registry Key "CDInstall" set to a value of 1 triggers a SFC to request the disk even though a local SP folder is present and should be it's first search path. | Re: sfc /scannow My CD (SP2) was recently supplied with our newly built computer and I've done all the updates. Unfortunately the problems which have dogged us since we got it in August are still there despite the computer shop sending back the hard drive and the memory and supposedly running it on test for 48 hours with no problems (but probably doing nothing with it but turn it on). Once I got it home and attached all the peripherals the problems started again. It hangs and restarts frequently, usually when on the internet (especially on facebook or anything with graphics). I wanted to run sfc /scannow because I guess the OS is getting corrupted by continuous improper restarts. I haven't actually tried putting the my disk in yet, I'm at work and the problem computer is at home. I was just gathering more information and seeking advice. "R. | Re: sfc /scannow Thanks for the additional details, helps. I'd suggest as a first step that you update your Network card driver and Video driver. If the problem appears with peripherals connected then you've got a driver issue or that all too common condition of "Interactions" between two or more items that don't play well together. It's always important to update ALL items on a PC ( Drivers, Software updates, Patches....). The way it works is one fix may require another. Everything in a PC works like a putting together a jigsaw puzzle. I'd also connect only one peripheral at a time and monitor the PC to see if any faults happen, then add another. If the PC has been a problem since you purchased it, you may want to request an exchange depending on how many times it's been to the shop for repairs. | Re: sfc /scannow Thanks for the advice. It has been back to the shop more than four times, we have tried swopping screens, printers, keyboards, mouses, etc, cannot pinpoint the fault which only occurs at home, event viewer never points to anything specific. I have wondered if taking out the video card (NVIDIA Geoforce 3500GT I think) might be something else to try, as it did the same before the last "return" even though I had downloaded the absolutely uptodate NVIDIA driver. This time I assume it's using the original driver. I hadn't thought of the network card and drivers, will investigate that when I get home. It also hangs/restarts when using a new removable hard drive which works fine on our older computer and all others I've tried it on. I managed to get home for 15 minutes over lunch and tried the "Home" CD on sfc /scannow and it actually got as far as one third through the "verifying all protected Windows files are intact and in their original versions" .....then it restarted!! (I had even disabled antivirus just in case it interfered). The computer shop insist there is nothing wrong with it but what use is it if we can't use it for anything other than turning it on and off. There must be corrupt files now, Internet Explorer 7 seems to be playing up, various sites including Microsoft.com won't display correctly, or just appear in Google, as if we had searched for them. Sorry to ramble on, I am just so, so frustrated! I really appreciate your help and assistance. "R. McCarty" wrote: > Thanks for the additional details, helps. You only bought it in August and the shop from where you got it obviously knows you've had errors from the beginning. I'd take it back and insist on getting credit for it. Then buy a computer from somewhere else if possible. Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" MS-MVP Windows - Shell/User |

| Re: sfc /scannow Thanks Malke, what you write makes perfect sense of course and I agree 100%with you. I'd love to start again and put this nightmare behind us. Unfortunately, the shop (which is part of a South African computer franchise chain) dug their heels in and won't replace it or give credit because it's over 7 days old and we didn't actually use it online for the first week because we were waiting for ADSL line, so all appeared fine. So in the last instance they sent away the hard drive and the memory to the suppliers for replacement because they thought it might be the cause. We waited three weeks for the return of the machine - did the updates again, etc. etc. I reckon the only other way of demonstrating the problem is to insist they send someone from Head Office to our home, where everything is plugged in, just to prove the point! Thanks again. "Malke" wrote: > tess wrote: > > Thanks for the advice. | Re: sfc /scannow Malke This is the second report in the last few days where the user is complaining that System File Checker demands Professional and they have a Home Edition disk. It makes wonder whether some sort of repair has been done using a Professional disk. That is something that needs to be taken up with the repairer! -- Hope this helps.
