Cut, Copy and Paste Problem Gets Screen Shot or Screen Capture Ins

I have two computers with this problem. I am running Windows XP Pro with
Office XP Pro (Office 2002), Pentium 4 chip or higher, 1 gig(+) RAM. I have
a Microsoft Trackball Explorer on one computer, and a Microsoft wireless
optical mouse 5000.

The problem with screen shots taking the place of my cut or copy and paste
just started occurring.

Most of the times that I try to copy and paste something I get a screen
capture instead of the text that I want to either cut or copy and paste. I
have tried all methods of copying and pasting including:

Clipboard: always starts with screen capture
Shortcuts: Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V
Menu: Edit-Copy and Edit-Paste
Mouse right click: copy and paste

Almost everytime I get a screen capture instead of what I want to copy.
Additionally, when I open the Windows XP clipbook viewer it shows a screen
shot instead of the "text."

This problem is independent of the Office applications and other programs
too. Many times the computer is capturing screens even when I am not trying
to copy something. When I open an Office program and the clipboard viewer I
see it fill up with screen shots. When I clear the clipboard it automatically
fills up again.

I believe this to be a problem associated with Windows XP as the problem
happens in notepad and IE.

I have scanned the computer with AdAware, Spybot, and Symantec Antivirus and
the problem persists.

Does anybody have the same problem or a solution other than a clean
re-install?

Check for keys on the kb that may be sticking and/or check the button settings in
Control Panel > Mouse.

A few things to try:

- Right-click is slow or weird behavior caused by context menu handlers:
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/slowrightclick.htm
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/rcdelay.htm

That could work if those sections of the context menu are damaged, I
guess. It shouldn't hurt anything to read these articles and consider
the fixes.

- I _believe_ Copy Paste are connected to Ole components, which are tied
to IE. It might help to repair Internet Explorer to get these working
right again:

How to Reinstall or Repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in
Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;q318378

- Perhaps just re-registering some of these .dll's will fix it.

Click Start button, Run command and type in the text box:

Regsvr32 /i ole32.dll and click [OK] or Hit [Enter] on your keyboard.

Regsvr32 /i shell32.dll and click [OK] or Hit [Enter] on your keyboard.

Regsvr32 mshtml.dll and click [OK] or Hit [Enter] on your keyboard.

- Look for malware on the machine.

Re: Cut, Copy and Paste Problem Gets Screen Shot or Screen Capture

Thanks, but the items you noted are not the problem or the source of the
problem. I am wondering, however, if the copy -paste, use of clipboard is
tied to the use of my new KVM switch which is PS2 on one side (keyboard side)
and USB on the 2 computers side. Could there be something about devices that
try to marry PS2 devices to USB computers?

There's always a possibility for that but I can't say if there is or not. One way
to see if the isue is in any way linked to the kvm is to connect a keyboard and mouse
directly to the PC bypassing the KVM all together.

I can say that kvm's are known to cause strange happenings with the devices
connected to them. I stopped some time ago connecting my mice to mine because it
caused the pointer to slowly trudge across the screen without even as much as a
finger on the mouse. I've never had any kb issues to date with it and now Murphy
probably has the wheels in motion for creation.

I've searched high/low for any type of clue with nothing to show. If Elmo's
suggestions don't pan out and neither does bypassing the kvm, I'm at a loss aside
from thinking a key stuck, a bad wire or a defunct kb.

Restart the comp and start hitting the F8 key enter Windows advanced
options menu - Highlight safemode and hit enter.Check whether this
problem occurs in safemode. Also try this click START then RUN type
MSCONFIG hit enter frm the dialog click on startup tab - Disable all
start up items.Reboot the comp. Also uninstall all the newly installed
software. While performing above troubleshooting steps disconnect
external devices connected to the comp. Also backup important data If
necessary. If all the above steps fails create a new user account
accessing control panel USER ACCOUNTS.see whether this problem occurs
also in new user account.
