Music File Download

I don't know if this is the right group for some help but I don't know where
else to go.
I visit a site that has many songs in mpeg format and when I click on a link
to download a song the dialog box shown in the attachment appears. I then
download and save to a folder from which I can play the music. I am using
Windows Media Player
10 in XP Home Edition. I have a friend with the same computer and similar
software but when he tries to download from the same site, he does not get
the dialog box and the option to download. Instead the music begins to play
and he does not have the option to save the file. Does anyone know why he
has a problem that I don't? TIA Stan

In Control Panel, open the FOLDERS applet and look under the FILE TYPES
tab for the extension in question.

Checking the confirm download box should cause the prompt that you see.

Re: Music File Download

Your friend, at one time, chose play - and he also put a check in the box
that says "Don't Show Me This Again".

So, now he doesn't see the box and he has taken away the chance to make a
choice as to what he wants to do.

Follow Dev's advice.

Dev,
My friend checked under File Types and the box you mentioned was checked.
Any other suggestions? Thanks for the tip.

Thanks for including a screen shot. Uncheck the checkbox that says "Always
ask before opening this type of file" and click Open. After you do that,
any time you encounter an MP3 on the web, it will open the MP3 instead of
asking if you want to save it. You can still save instead of opening by
right-clicking the link and selecting Save link as...

Re: Music File Download

To uncheck as you suggest he has to have the dialog box in the screenshot.
He doesn't get that box---that is what I get but not him. Therin lies the
problem. If that option appeared for him he could then save and play at
will.
