OE 6 & Gmail

OK, I got a new laptop and now that I have XP on it, it works fine. I
got rid of the stupid recovery disk that Gateway sent.

The only problems I have are two different ones.

1.) Under options for OE I have a check mark for "When starting, go
directly to my inbox." It does not do that and I keep getting the
opening screen. I don't have this problem at all on my desktop. Is
there something I am not doing or doing that needs to be changed? Any
help would be appreciated.

2.) The other problem I have is with Gmail.

I have no trouble sending emails through POP with OE through gmail on
my desktop but can't seem to get it to work with my new laptop. I am
able to receive messages just fine.

I already ran the troubleshooter and it says that everyting is fine.
I
also ran the automated email setup for OE.

Please give me some hints if you all would. I am at a lost to know
what to do.

Is there anyone who can help me with these two small problems before
Friday? I am leaving ona trip, the reason I even got a laptop in the
first place.

Thanks so much in advance.

1. Try removing the check mark, apply the change and select
"OK" out. The re-open Tools > options, insert the check mark and
select "OK".

2. Tools > Accounts > "Mail" tab, select your Gmail account and
select "Properties". Select the "Server" tab.
The "Outgoing Mail (SMTP):" field needs to contain the address of
your ISP's mail server, e.g. smtp.tiscali.co.uk and NOT the Gmail
server address.

When you create mail which you wish to send from your Gmail
account, either set that account as the Default (Tools > Accounts
> "Mail" tab, highlight your Gmail account and click on "Set as

Default") OR change the "From" address at the top of the e-mail if
you have multiple accounts).

Mine doesn't. What's your secret?

Cancel that. I've just re-done the OE account settings for my
Gmail account and it's working fine now in both directions.

VP, Full instructions for configuring OE for your Gmail account
are available here
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/a...y?answer=13276
and they work!! (but only if you do it right ) ;-)

Re: OE 6 & Gmail

A1. Your current Identity may be damaged, especially if its the default Main
Identity. Try one or more of your accounts in a new Named Identity (File >
Identities > Add new identity). Assuming all is well, (1) compact all
folders in the old identity, (2) import messages from the old identity into
the new one, and then (3) delete the old one (File > Identities > Manage
Identities).

To avoid such corruption in future:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [not available in SP2] and frequently
perform a manual compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm

- WinXP SP2 only: Do not shut down your machine while Windows is
automatically compacting your message store.

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause such
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

A2. See A1 above.

None of your problems have anything to do with WinXP.

Ask elsewhere

Why not tell him where to look? You answer is neither constructive or polite.
Best answer might be found in "microsoft.public.inetexplorer_ie6.outlookexpr ess"
But your problem is either you do not have POP mail setup in Gmail and/or the right ports set in OE.

Why should I do the research to find the appropriate groups FOR THEM?
It's their problem, let THEM search for the answer. Not only will
they get a better answer, but it will sharpen their skills for the
NEXT time they need an answer.

I will not spoon feed anybody. You learn by figuring things out for
yourself, not by having somebody spoon feed you the answers.
