I'm scanning a bunch of pictures fast like a video, and about every 10
seconds it slows right down for about 2-3 seconds, then resumes. I
can't see any tasks in the task manager that are using up CPU time.
What else can I look at to track this down?

I once had this when playing doom many years ago and it was a printer
driver of some kind.

You need to find and identify the specific process or application that's
runs every 10 seconds and slows things down.
You can do this with Windows Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del key), select the
Processes Tab,
Next, click on the CPU column twice, this should bring the System Idle
process to the top (as long as you are not using any other applications).
Then about every 10 seconds or so you should another process (the one that's
slowing down your PC) float to or near the top of the list.

Once you have Process Explorer installed and running:
In the taskbar select View and check 'Show Process Tree' and 'Show Lower
Pane' options.
(This will provide the detailed info you need)
Next click on the CPU column to sort processes by %CPU usage.
Then click on the process of interest that's listed in the CPU % column,
once it's highlighted, right click and from the options listed select:
Search Online
This should display what out there on the web about that process.

Note: some entries like Explorer and svchost may need to be expanded to show
the detail,
(sub processes), in this case click on the + located to the left of the
entry.

time has the image name 'system'.

I might try the Process Explorer next.

Sorry, your topic says video playback, but you are talking about looking at
still images.

How large are the images, and what program are you using to view them?

If they are large images. chances are the program is caching them.

How much RAM do you have etc.. would be helpful to know also.

'System' the process that a lot of Windows 'Services' run under. When using
Process Explorer you need to expand the 'System' process to see these
services (Indexing service, AV services and others).

I am loading up jpegs one after the other and blitting them to the
screen, so that it looks like a video. I can get around 5-30 fps
depending on the file size.

Ok I'll check it out again. I ran the PE. But it wasn't happening last
night, maybe it only happens when my PC is tired?!?!
