| Re: Is SuSE 10.1 buggy? SUSE IS JUNK !!!!!! Ever since Novell bought out Suse, the quality has gone way down hill. The last release 10.1 is so full of bugs that it is almost unusable. They actually released this pile of crap with a broken package manager !! Get on the Ubuntu train and you'll never look at Suse again. | Re: Is SuSE 10.1 buggy? You will love it.....I did the SUSE 10.1 and am back with 9.1 on one machine, Ubuntu on 2 others Fedora on another; all dual boot. I've tried dozens of distros and still think Ubuntu is among the top two or three - maybe 1st. OpenSUSE is bare-bones, minimally supported, and contains ONLY OSS software. For $50, SLED is an outstanding value. And for an additional annual fee, which is also pretty good, the support is pretty good. > Ever since Novell bought out Suse, the quality has gone way down hill. Something similar happened when Red Hat released version 5.0. Red Hat 4.0 was so good it got awarded product of the year, in a tie with Windows NT 4.0. Then 4.1 and 4.0 came out and each was so good that NT 4.0 didn't even come close. And 4.3 was so good that it looked for a while like Microsoft might be in serious trouble. Then Red Hat got greedy. They released a "Master" CD image that had a bug. It was a minor bug, and a call to Red Hat could fix it in about 4 minutes. The problem was that if you DIDN'T contact Red Hat, you could spend days trying to figure out what was wrong. It's quitel likely that Red Hat was trying to get a better count of how many people were using Red Hat Linux, and to generate some revnue. The problem was that when users couldn't get their cheap-bytes CD to install, Linux users began looking at alternatives such as Mandrake, TurboLinux, Caldera, and SUSE. > The last release 10.1 is so full of bugs that it is almost unusable. Now you have me curious. Since you provide no specifics, the simplest assumption is that you purchased or assembled a "Linux Hostile" machine, installed "OpenSUSE" and did it using a LiveCD. > They actually released this pile of crap with a broken package manager !! I purchased a commercial copy of SLED, and had no problems getting it installed on a thinkpad T40. They are doing a lot of things right. Many people who want ONLY OSS software on the machine, really like UBUNU. In many ways, UBUNTU is te fulfillment of Richard Stallman's dream of an ALL OSS system that functions as well or better than a proprietary system. > Kinglen Wang wrote: > > I am trying to decide whether to load up Slack 11 or if I should try one > > of the more modern, full featured versions of Linux. Slack is very popular among those who like their Linux lean and light. Pat Volkerding elected to create a number of different customized kernels that provide core drivers and minimal modprobes, providing a very lean kernel which can run well on even older computers with very little memory. > > I am considering SuSE 10.1 I've had VERY good experiences with SUSE 10.0. I use the VMWare Appliance version, but it's a good "basic" Linux system. You might also want to look at LinSpire. They have a nice busness model, and support program. With ANY version of Linux, the "Freebie" versions (free as in beer) are often very good, but usualy involve a lot of manual tweaking and tuning that isn't required in the "commercial" versions. There are often better drivers, especially for Video Cards, Printers, USB devices, and WiFi cards. > > Kinglen Wang > > wangk@entermail.org |
