Do I need to do a clean install?

Hi,
I saw some place here that I should do a clean install every so often.
If this is true can you answer these questions?

How often should I do this?

Why should I do this?

Please give all links if there are any preferably from Microsoft.
Thanks for your help in the past.

Have a good day,
RScotti

It's usually not true.

Usually, there's no need to ever reinstall XP. Sometimes viruses and
other blue meanies screw up Windows so bad it's necessary but if you
keep your security up, maintain you computer and practice safe hex, you
can have an XP installation last for years.

Unless you are some major problems, the answer is never.
>
> Why should I do this?

Some systems have been trashed so badly by viruses that a clean install is
the only way to get rid of the pests.

Yes - it's roughly equivalent to the old dictum that you needed a good
dose of sulfur and molasses every spring. It's simply not true.

It's not true, at all. The is no valid technical reason for
periodically reinstalling the OS.

After a catastrophic hard drive failure.

To install the OS on the new hard drive.

Where ever you saw it - it's wrong.
Period.

If you need to perform a clean install, it was because you did not properly
maintain your system *or* something catastrophic happened (like hardware
failure) outside of your control.

Terrible advice!

Only when you have a problem, and all other efforts to fix it have
failed. It should be a last resort.

You shouldn't.

Thanks everybody. You cleared up a this for me. I could swear I saw it here to do a clean install at least every year
but I can't find it now.

Not true at all. Properly maintain your system and there is no need to
reinstall XP ever.

Re: Do I need to do a clean install?

RScotti - Regarding "...I saw some place here that I should do a clean
install every so often...." - a clean install is drastic and the "last
resort" for a prolem computer and "every so often" should not be
recommended. .

You probably did. There *are* people who do that and recommend it to
others. Some of them post here. However, it's very poor advice.

Re: Do I need to do a clean install?

Thanks again everyone. I will always ask if I don't know,
and NEVER just take one person's advice UNLESS they are a MVP or I see that they have done a lot of credible advice
here.

Stick to the latter more than the former - and always mix in "never take one
person's advice"..
Just because someone is an MVP does not make them infallible.
