Hi there. Does anybody know why the task bar and start up menu do not appear
after logging onto windows xp and how to resolve this? i can run programs
after pressing "ctrl" + "alt" + "delete" and running them individually from
the task manager but otherwise i have my desktop and nothing else.

When this happens, if you go to task manager, is explorer.exe running in the
processes tab, or not?
If you go to file | run | explorer.exe <enter> does everything show up?
What do you see in your event logs?

When this happens, if you go to task manager, is explorer.exe running in the
processes tab, or not?
If you go to file | run | explorer.exe <enter> does everything show up?
What do you see in your event logs?

when i try and run explorer.exe as a new task, nothing happens. The start up
menu flickers for a milisec and then disappears. It does not show up in the
processes tab. I have also tried pressing Ctrl + Esc (did some searching in
vain on internet to try and resolve this) but nothing happens. Please advise
- any help is appreciated.

Is explorer.exe running in Processes at all?

How long ago did this start, and are you aware of any changes that occurred
immediately prior to this problem cropping up?

I'd boot into safe mode and see if you can find out the cause - you may have
malware on this box. Check the event logs.
