FAXING USING CABLE MODEM

Dear All ,
I am using Dell Home Pc , and Windows XP
I have the send &receive fax software on my pc which I have used it a lot in
the past to fax but I used a Land phone Line ..
Now , I do not have a land phone line anymore , I have a cable modem(cable
vision ) to connect to internet ..
my Question is : can I still use the cable modem to send a document from my
pc or from my mail box in internet ? what do I need to do to be able to ?
change setting wise..
or do I still need a land phone line ?

Re: FAXING USING CABLE MODEM

Since I chose Not to go the CV route, eventhough I did thik about it, I can
only suggest looking at their website.
Did they give you a multi-port router/modem? Their website says you should
be able to do it w/no prob.

They say to plug into the std tel. jack. Is the line still in use or did you
let them give you a new tel. #?
I'd be int. in how you make out. In the meantime good luck...

Re: FAXING USING CABLE MODEM

Faxes go through the land line, unless you sign up for and pay for a
internet fax service.

Re: FAXING USING CABLE MODEM

If you wish to send faxes as you normally would have using a landline
using your modem and the Windows XP fax software, you will need a
landline to be able to send and receive faxes on the number you
previously used; your cable modem is not connected to the phone line
system and does not support your fax software.

You do have the ability to send and receive faxes by email, but you will
have to sign up to an online service to get this working, and you will
most likely receive a different number on which you can send and receive
faxes by email.
Please have a look here http://www.savetz.com/fax/
Before you make any decisions to sign up for such a service.

Hope this helps.

Re: FAXING USING CABLE MODEM

I assume you still have your old fax modem in your computer. If you have a
spare
phone jack just connect it to your computers phone jack as before. Works
fine
for me.

Cable modems are not "modems" in the traditional sense. These a
"digital" devices which "encode" Internet send/receive requests over
COAX cable TV wires. They do not provide any standard modem features
(voice modem, speakerphone and FAX modem.) If you want to have
standard faxing capatibilites, you must have a standard land phone
line, VOIP service for faxes or cell service with a fax ready cell
phone.

What do you do for telephone service? Do you use VOIP or rely on a cell
phone?

The reason I ask is because Faxes MUST travel over a normal telephone line
or something that acts like a telephone line.

With an ordinary analog (fax) modem and a VOIP connection, you should be
able to send and receive faxes. With only a cell phone, you're a goner.

If you buy an athletic "cup" you will still need something from which to
drink coffee!

The fact that two items have seemingly the same name (modem) does not mean
their functions are compatible.

You need a land phone line, or as another poster
pointed out, something that acts like it - cable phone
from your cable service provider, VOIP, or cell phone
plus an adapter for the modem. (I don't even know
if the latter exists.) If you do a lot of long distance
calling, the cable service phone may be the most
cost-effective and simplest to use.

Alternatives to a phone line are the FAX services
which provide an interface between the Internet and
the Plain-Ol'-Telephone Service (POTS) world.
Try googling for their names using "fax over internet",
check out the hits, such as eFAX.com, FAX.com,
etc.

Re: FAXING USING CABLE MODEM

What is it you want to accomplish? Is it truly faxing, or do you want the
capability to send a document? What kind of receiver equipment does the
receiver have? Fax? PC?

Faxes have to travel over the dial-up telephone network. If you don't
have a land-based phone line, your only option for sending faxes is to
use one of the internet-based fax services to send them for you. See
http://www.efax.com/en/efax/twa/page...age?CMP=OTC-us

Alternatively you can send documents by scanning them and sending them
as E-mail attachments. But that's not fax.

Or simulations thereof - as in telephone service by "cable
providers" like Comcast, Time Warner, etc., and Voice
Over Internet Protocol (VOIP), using Skype, Vonage, etc.

True, and thanks for the addition.
