Re: file type associations

A little while ago i had a problem with file associations. In my case it was
associating avi files to divx rather than its default Nero association: See
below:

/quote
"I have a problem with file type associations: I've asociated a file type to
open with a particular progam - and it does. But for some reason in explorer
the file still has another program icon associated with it as if it would
open with that other program but instead opens with the file i've associated
those particular file types with. o_O
/end quote

The recomended solution worked - to a degree. The icons changed to the
program i wanted to associated the files to BUT so did every other file type
that Nero had associated itself with. e.g. .dat files. Attempting to change
these to yet another programs (i like to open my dat files with notepad)
would result in the same problem described in my quote. Worse yet, it would
associate my avi files to the notepad icon rather than DivX's. aka i was
back to square 1.

note: although the icons were being swaped independently of my input, the
programs would still open with the programs i had associated the file types
with.

This is really annoying. Not critical perhaps but annyoing all the same. Any
help in the matter would be greatly appreciated.

Re: file type associations

This is due to the way file-associations are stored in the registry.

As well as 'Edit' and 'Open' values there is a 'Default Icon' value. This
is not always used, but when it is, it over-rides the Open value in
determining which executable's icon should be used.

The entry consists of the full path to the file containing the icon, a
comma, then the index of the icon. (files can contain more than one icon)

Re: file type associations

So what your saying is: There is no way to change a file types associated
default icon without manually changing the default icon value. Which in my
case, changes all the other file types associated default icon for that
particular program that would, by default, open that particular file.

Correct?
