Start > Control Panel > Scheduled Tasks > Add Scheduled Task
At this point, a window opens that guides you thru the steps.
At the end, it says

A new task has been created, but may not run because the
account information could not be set
0x80070005: Access is denied.
Try using the Task page Browse button to locate the application

When you get to the password screen, there is a warning that
it might not work if you leave the password blank. So I have
tried it both ways.

At this point, either of two things would help.
(1) You know what I am doing wrong and can tell me how to fix it.
(2) You can point me to an example that works.

The help files mention things about tasks only working when
the creator is logged in. I wonder if that could be the problem.

OBTW: I checked the subject lines of the last 1000 messages on
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general, and neither taskscheduler,
"task scheduler" scheduler does not appear. I also googled for
"microsoft ask scheduler" and read the first three entries, but
they were no help.

Yes - but you did not google for the most obvious thing you had - and stated
clearly in your post...

Using that in google brought up MANY hits - but the most promising (and
published by Microsoft no less) is this one:

Hopefully the given work-around does what you need and if you have to do the
other alternative and contact Microsoft - you have a pretty good case and
probably will not be charged for the hotfix/call.

Scheduled Tasks requires a passworded account. You can create a new user
account to use with Scheduled Tasks.

Additionally when the Task Scheduler service runs a job by using a specific
account, the Task Scheduler service tries to determine whether this account
is also the account of the current logged-on user. If the account is that of
the current logged-on user, the security context of the scheduled task is
mapped to the security context of that user. This process directs scheduled
jobs to that user's desktop.

Scheduled Tasks|Advanced|View Log may provide some details. If the job
connects to another machine you may need to add the user/ group 'logon as
batch job' rights (server side). Control Panel|Admin Tools|Local Security
Policy\Local Policies\User Rights Assignments
"Log on as a batch job"

If the task completes but the job does not then there is a problem in the
job itself. Remember that if it involves network resources to make sure the
user account has permissions to the resources and also use UNC paths as
mapped drives won't natively exist when no one is logged on.
