He has tried in vain to retrieve his documents all saved using the FAST
transfer wizard from XP SP2
He has made 2 separate saves and has the correctly named files i.e
IMG00001.dat and "status" in the folder USMT2.UNC
He has now given me the files and now I have tried FASTConv with the error
message "Source store is invalid"
The windows fastwizard gives "the source folder does not contain the correct
data" for every version of FAST he and I have tried
A computer pro has also spent hours trying with no success
So he and the computer pro have given up
I and we have looked at a million goggle hits and have found at least one
person with the same problem - plus looked at the switches on FASTConv exe
files with the most careful considerations

So he now wants to PAY someone - hopefully Microsoft to attempt to recover
the files - but he says Microsoft will not do this for him - Can anyone here
offer a contact name ??? - the professional data recovery type of firms only
offer to get info of hard drives not off a Microsoft corrupt file
BTW the files are about 500MB and the header text can be read in a file
viewer and the 4th line reads DriverVer 07/01/2001,5.1.2350.0

I don't know if Robert will answer, but. . . when trying to restore the
files, you are pointing to the *parent* folder, not the .UNC one?
Specifying the .UNC folder can give that error message.

that didn't help. do you have any other suggests? It just tells me the

I fould Ramesh's site before. I downloaded that tool and it kept telling me
no valid information store. I created a new FAST file and ran the tool
against it. I got the same error. I am guessing I am not using the tool
right. What is the chances that both FAST files are courpt. Can you give me
an example of the correct syntax. Here is what I am typig.

FASTconv /S c:\FAST\ /D c:\Data

The person with the problem has paid MS UK (England) the £40 help fee and is
waiting to hear back as to where his FAST files can be sent for attempted
recovery - but after a week has not heard - he is not impressed with MS paid
support

I have tried every conceivable site with any help on FAST and fastconv - and
tried every possible combination of switches on the FASTconv command line
input -

on the command line switches you must specify as a minimum

FASTconv /s:<source_store> /d:<destination_store> /t:<temp store>

I'm sorry, I'm not an expert on this -- perhaps Ramesh or somebody else
more knowledgeable may join in.

Have you checked the other points mentioned on Ramesh's page, though:
that you haven't renamed the store folder, that both computers are at
the same service pack level and that the Migwiz.exe file on both is the
same version?

I am also surprised there was no responses to either of my 2 newsgroup
posts - I was only asking for a contact - within MS if possible where the
files could be sent for examination etc - and offering to pay for the
service - several hundred dollars or more if that's the price of relying on
a FAST file to keep ones important docs- I have told the person who has the
problem to keep onto Microsoft - after all he's paid the £40 help charge

I tried all the versions of Migwiz too - but am suprised the FASTconv would
not work at all - no matter what switches I used - and where the store
folder was or what name it was given - or if I specified the parent folder I
only got the same message - "Store location is invalid"

Well it appears to have worked for me. Below is the syntax i used. It took
about 15min and the USMT2.UNC was 3.5g. I am not sure why it's not working
for the other guy. I am sorry I don't have any suggestion.

FASTConv.exe /S c:\USMT2.UNC /D c:\test /T c:\temp

I am very pleased to hear that it finally worked for you - very well done -
I have tried the exact switch line combination but from D drive - I'll try
it from C drive just incase there is a difference - meanwhile MS paid
support say they are still working out how they can help
