You should be able to use a USB floppy but not all USB floppies work
during the text mode setup portion:

A connected USB floppy disk drive does not work when you press F6 to
install mass storage drivers during the Windows XP installation process
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/916196

The same issue may affect the answer file if it is supplied on an
unsupported USB floppy drive. Use a supported USB drive for the answer
file. Another method is to use a network share point or to create
(burn) an XP CD with the answer file on the cd.

Create your answer file, but instead of saving it as
unattended.txt save it as winnt.sif . Put winnt.sif in the I386
folder on your XP installation CD.

For more info, do a Google search for winnt.sif. Here's an
example of an article you'll find.

Create a Basic Unattended Setup

Good luck
