Reinstallation of XP

So my hard drive recently got corrupted. After I recovered the data, I
decided to replace my HD with one that had more GB. My question is, do I
need to buy Windows XP again? I came previously installed on my Dell when I
purchased it, so I would think that my license is still good, but I could be
wrong. When I contacted Dell they told me they would send me the disk to
reinstall, but it was just Service Pack 2, and since it is not working, I
fear I need to purchase and install XP from scratch. Or did Dell just send
me the wrong disk and I should ask for the whole program again and not just
SP2?

Your original copy of XP should be legal on the machine...
so just perform a fresh install.
If the original cd was not sp2...just use the cd you got to apply sp2...then
re-update

Are you sure it's *just* Service Pack 2 and not Dell Microsoft Windows
XP Home Edition SP2 Reinstallation CD:

It does say Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition SP2 Reinstallation CD, however
also across the top of the CD from Dell it reads: For Reinstallation on an
existing Windows computer, or something like that. I was thinking that maybe
since Windows was installed on my old hard drive, I was having problems
installing Windows because the operating system was removed with the old hard
drive. I don't know. When I boot from CD, it appears to have successfully
installed windows, and then it says it is going to reboot after completion
to finish setup, but when it reboots, nothing happens, and if I try to
reinstall CD, it says that an operating system is in use, so thats why I
thought it was the type of CD. Maybe I'm actually having problems with my
hard drive, I'm just trying to eliminate any "potential" problems.

The link you provided is exactly what I have. So my question remains, since
it reads that it is for Windows "Already Installed on your Computer", will it
still work when my hard drive is new as well?

Yes.

You have an installation disk which already has SP2, which is good. The
"already installed on your computer" just means that you have a branded
OEM disk, which you already knew! Your license is to be able to use that
particular type of XP on your computer for as long you own it. Just use
the product key printed on your Certificate of Authenticity sticker on
your PC case in the event you are prompted to enter it (it's possible
you won't be prompted if your disk is BIOS-locked to your motherboard).

Do you have your Dell drivers disk? If you do, and if you have all your
data and all your application installation media, then you're ready to
perform a clean install:

Re: Reinstallation of XP

I think you missed the part where she said she already did the install, and
upon reboot to complete the install nothing happens.

So you just get a black screen?

Sgopus suggested I may have missed this bit.

You need to perform a clean install and follow the directions to the
letter:

http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

Note this step:

15. When you see the "Press any Key to Reboot" do not Press any Key. If
CD boots anyway, remove CD and reboot.

The reason is that once you get to this point, rather than boot off the
CD, you need to boot off your hard drive. Setup then will continue, and
you should be fine.

Re: Reinstallation of XP

Yes, I just get a black Dell screen with F2 = Setup and F12 = Boot Menu in
the top right screen after install of XP. Daave: I have the Dell drivers
which I downloaded from Dell's home site onto my flash drive. Do I need to
install these before it will finish install of XP?

Re: Reinstallation of XP

It appears you may have missed my other post, Nicole:

You need to perform a clean install and follow the directions to the
letter:

Note this step:

15. When you see the "Press any Key to Reboot" do not Press any Key. If

you should be fine.

Here's another guide:

http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase...p_sg_clean.asp

_________________________________________________

I assume that if you follow the directions to a T, then you won't get
that black Dell screen. But in case you do, please post back.

Unless you have drivers for a RAID drive (see Step #5 from first link),
you can safely install them after XP is installed. It is recommended you
install the chipset drivers first, then LAN, then graphics, then audio.
