dos box memory I have a DOS program running in XP Home. It's a word processor which indicates what percentage of its available memory is being used with a particular file. Problem is, even with a relatively small file the wp says the system is 'low' on memory whereas when its run in Win98 or 95 (multi-boot system) it shows (with one particular file) 65% memory free (in XP it shows LOW MEMORY). My Win9x setups allocate 590KB to a DOS window. I don't see how to allocate memory to a 'dos window' in XP. Is there a way? I checked the properties of the window but saw nothing. Thanks for the help Vic

Re: dos box memory You can try putting the program in Windows 95 or 98 compatibility mode. However putting your program into compatibility mode might get rid of the error.

Re: dos box memory Hi LittleMoo Tried the suggestion of compatibility mode (Win95) but alas, no joy. Same message (LOW MEMORY, or sometimes, NO MEMORY). I am concerned if I use the program HOPING XP will dynamically allocate memory as necessary, there may be file corruption. Any other ideas of how to get more baseline memory to this DOS program? PS: thnx for the link to MS regarding the issue Vic ___ "LittleMoo" <ThisIsNot@My.Email> wrote in message news:OGoWNb96GHA.4176@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > "LittleMoo" <ThisIsNot@My.Email> wrote in message > news:uZnXQV96GHA.4552@TK2MSFTNGP05.phx.gbl... >> You can try putting the program in Windows 95 or 98 compatibility >> mode. >> >> Run Older Programs on Windows XP: >> http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/u...appcompat.mspx >> >> -Dan >> >> "Vic" <nospam@bogusaddress.com> wrote in message >> news:O3NvIQ96GHA.2380@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > <snip> >>> Problem is, even with a relatively small file the wp says the system >>> is >>> 'low' on memory whereas when its run in Win98 or 95 (multi-boot >>> system) >>> it shows (with one particular file) 65% memory free (in XP it shows >>> LOW >>> MEMORY). > <snip> >>> I don't see how to allocate memory to a 'dos window' in XP. Some old DOS programs, and this might include the particular version of this word processing program, needs overlays to access the extended or expanded memory. This is not directly feasible under Windows XP or DOS-emulation in XP. Read up the installation instructions for the word processing application; tweaking autoexec.nt and/or config.nt might solve the problem.
