Is it normal for smoke to come out the back of my computer?

It isn't, actually.
To overcome your predicament consider applying a method which was developed
by the Society for Smoke Free Computers.
1. Fill up you bathtub with water, add about four to five large bags of ice
available at your local supermarket.
2. Unplug your computer and carefully insert the unit into the bathtub.
3. Wait for about 57 minutes, then remove the computer and place it in an
freezer for another 2 days and 45 minutes.
4. Remove the unit from the freezer and bury it.

Rest assured, following the above mentioned procedure will rectify your
problem.

If you stay with the online CDO you'll have to ask others who use it, otherwise
setup the ng's in your email application.

Don't use the web interface. It's lousy. Use a newsreader. XP comes with
one, Outlook Express. Here is a link on how to set up OE for newsgroups.
