| Can I prevent Limewire use? I am worried about my brother. He is constantly downloading songs off of limewire. I told him to stop. But he sneaks limewire back on. I told my parents but they don't care. Is there a way I can secretly go prevent limewire from functioning on his computer. |

At least ask him to use an antivirus and spyware program, and keep them updated. |

| Re: Can I prevent Limewire use? As far as I'm aware, Limewire is a legal program used for sharing files which may or may not be legal to share. Make sure he is aware that use of such programs may be monitored and if he attempts to acquire any files with it that are not legal to share, he may be prosecuted. Many songs are copywrited and not legal to share. Many songs now are legal to freely share. You can make him aware that he could end up with significant fines if he is sharing the illegal files, but only his parents should be able to prevent his use of the program. <henree21******.com> wrote in message news:1160377982.045950.237440@e3g2000cwe.googlegro ups.com... >I am worried about my brother. If he is downloading pirated programs, his chance are high. Just tell him to run each download thru his antivirus scanner....if he does that you should both be safe. Unless of course, you live in the US.....where your rules are really idiotic for downloading songs. But c'est la vie. Move to Europe. (G) > |

But c'est la vie. Move to Europe. (G) >> > I don't suspect many people are going to move to Europe for the sole purpose of pirating songs, any more than they've fled to Europe just so they can legally smoke pot. They've cracked down on software pirating in the USA. They've started to crack down in China. Europe will follow. Pirating is theft. Some people don't think so because they're "only" stealing intellectual property. When they steal a copy of a song or program on the computer, the person who had it originally still has it. If you steal an apple, there is only one apple, it does not make a copy. The problem with intellectual theft is it takes away royalties from the one who made it and discourages others. Song writers make money every time a song is played. Singers only make money when they give concerts or sell albums (or t-shirts and other merchandise). If they can't sell albums (ie CDs) they don't make nearly as much, so fewer people want to join them, and it's already a high risk industry. There are many poor musicians. I think it's reasonable to pay $1 to a service company to download a song and burn it on as many discs as you like for your personal use. |

I think it's reasonable to pay $1 to a service > company to download a song and burn it on as many discs as you like > for your personal use. BUT....where did I say I was pirating?? I use both my own CD's and others I have legally downloaded for my own personal use on this computer ONLY. There is no difference between that and listening to the radio beside me. I don't make up music CD's for other people, nor do I sell them. In Canada, it is quite legal to download mp3's for personal use. And England and Europe and so on. It is just the music industry in the US that is suing people (unsuccessfully, I might add). I have used Limewire, but am not comfortable with it for some reason, but WinMX was my P2P of choice some years back. I have no need to download any more music, as I have quite enough to listen to now. Perhaps you mean well, but I am not about to get into a pissing contest with you over what is pirating and what is legal. Two different countries, two different people and that means two different viewpoints. Laynie |
