| Intel Pentium 4 Prescott and xp sp2 Hi, I was researching potential problems for xp sp2 and saw that it can be real nasty with the Intel P4 Prescott. I think I have one.,,,I understand the 3.00E means its a Prescott. I am including the specs of my processor, etc below. I read somewhere that a Revision of 8 or less is a problem. However, mine is B? Can you experts look at the specs below and let me know if this is going to a problem with xp sp2? What can I do in advance to ensure I don't have a problem? | Re: Intel Pentium 4 Prescott and xp sp2 Hi Brian, Thanks for reply. I am still on SP1 so, I don't know if I will have a problem after installing SP2. That is what my current concern is. Will the Everest tool you reference give me more info about the processor than the Intel tool that I used to provide the specs in the original post? Thanks Russ Brian A wrote: > If you're not having any problems then you shouldn't have a need to worry about it. > IIRC the Prescott issues had to do with the L2 Cache. | Re: Intel Pentium 4 Prescott and xp sp2 Like pennywise, had this ident. Prescott for 18 months with XP SP2. It sat on an Msi mobo. No conflict at all. Though true to form, it did run a bit on the 'warm' side. But with the Msi Cat running to monitor the heat all was OK + one or two extra fans :-). I have not heard of any family in the 5XXs causing any probs with XP. Ask Intel if you are that concerned - they give good help. There have been quite a few problems with this. They are not all common ones either and solutions seem to vary from one poster to another. I wish you every success with this upgrade. Rgds Antioch PS Have you sent off for your SP2 free CD? |

| Re: Intel Pentium 4 Prescott and xp sp2 Hi Antioch, Thanks for your replies. When I realized SP1 support ended on Oct 10, I started to research how to update with SP2. As I was researching, I learned that the Pentium 4 - Prescott can have a rather major conflict with SP2 (won't restart after installation). So I got the Intel idenificatin tool to try and figure out if I had one of the "problem" processors. I think I do, but I wasn't 100% sure so I put the specs on this thread to see if anyone else with more knowledge could confirm whether or not I do. It seems to be a combination of what processor it is, revision number, BIOS, etc. Then I was hoping someone might have some advice on what to do if I did have a Prescott P4 that was likely to conflict with SP2. I am afraid to just try the upgrade as I don't think I have the technical skills to deal with problem that it may create. As you can already tell, I don't have a lot of computer know-how. I will certainly go into the windowsupdate group and contact Intel as another poster suggested. BTW, I was going to do the SP2 upgrade by download vs. CD. Thanks Russ antioch wrote: > > Russ, > You know that SP1 support finishes on the 10th - might I suggest you go to > the windowsupdate group if you have any problems with the download, and in > fact to look through some of the threads involving this upgrade. | Re: Intel Pentium 4 Prescott and xp sp2 As long as you have the latest BIOS for your motherboard you will be OK. The BIOS updates the CPU microcode. A quick search of the Intel site shows you have the latest BIOS. Installing SP2 or any service pack may cause problems. Make sure you have a verified backup before starting. -- Kerry MS-MVP Windows - Shell/User http://www.vistahelp.ca k3pi@arrl.net wrote: > Hi, > > I was researching potential problems for xp sp2 and saw that it can be > real nasty with the Intel P4 Prescott. > > I think I have one.,,,I understand the 3.00E means its a Prescott.
