Epson printers firmware death ?

Does anyone know anything about the "programmed life" that's allegedly in
Epson printers.
i.e. I've heard the odd story about after x no. of pages they "die"

Just had another lady tell me her 18 month old D68 is telling her that it's,
in as many words, "died"

I've just been Googling to try and find out how and if one can reflash the
firmware in Epson printers.

TIA

regards, Richard

Re: Epson printers firmware death ?

RJK,

I am on the Epson UK site & there is nothing about Firmware death, upgrades...

Not sure if you can view this page:

http://esupport.epson-europe.com/Pro...dl8M3LB2K5gNT5

But you could use the link to contact support to ask them

If you cannot get that link then do this:

http://esupport.epson-europe.com/SupportHome.asp

Select a product range:

Inkject Printer

Select a product:

Stylus D68

OS:

Windows XP

Click the 'confirm selection' button

You will see the links there

My Photo 1280 is going strong after 5 years. It is getting long in the
tooth though.

Exactly how did it tell her it was dead?
Did she try running any of the diagnostics utilities?
Did she try installing it on another system (if available) to see if was responsive
or not?
Did she try using another known good working cable to see if it may be the cause of
the issue or not?
Did she try uninstalling/reinstalling the printers driver/software per the
manufacturers instructions?

You probably read all the tabloids that deal with outrageous news
about celebrities and UFOs too.

When can we expect questions about articles you've read in those?

Re: Epson printers firmware death ?

Oh dear, ...and thank you Newbie Coder, Jim, Brian A. and Uncle Grumpy

I'll try to further explain. First off, I should mention that I've always
used Epson - currently having a C82 and R300 , and there's a 880 ? I think
it is, in the house. I've always liked them, though, I've never used an
Epson printer excessively !

I haven't yet seen Jenny's PC, ...when I do, I'll post here what the exact
error message/problem is/was, (Jenny is the one who on the phone told me
that her D68 had died). From what I could decipher during that phone call,
she's getting a message containing something about about the "print-head or
printer/print-head life-expectency." I know that she does a lot of "card -
crafting" her printer gets VERY heavy use !
....btw her PC is not connected to the web.

QUITE a few years ago, a friend in Bridgwater - Shaun K. used his Epson
printer VERY heavily and it stopped working within it's 12 months
manufacturers warranty - chucking up a error message, (and I now so wish I'd
recorded the details!), and when he informed Epson, they as good as told him
that, they knew what the problem was i.e. something along the lines of "he
had exceeded the printers' life-expectancy", and immediately sent him a new
replacement printer with no more questions asked.

I did quite a bit of Googling before posting this OP, expecting to find lots
of pages on how to overcome this problem but didn't find very much, ...so
perhaps it's a myth ...but, I'm sure that I've read items in the distant
past about "no. of pages life expectancy" being firmwared into the things !!

regards, Richard

Re: Epson printers firmware death ?

I'm sure that manufactored items have a design life, and under heavy usage
this design life can be exceeded, I wouldn't go as far as saying it's a
conspiracy to cheat customers ie (device fails within a short time), nothing
lasts forever, things do wear out and they wear out faster with heavy usage.
seems normal to me.

Re: Epson printers firmware death ?

Ah ! ..found something i.e.
ebay item no. 280145505543 "EPSON PAGE RESET UTILITY" ...I think it may be
worth risking a couple of quid !!!
....so I wasn't seeing UFO's or suffering "false distant memory problems"
after all :-)
