System Restore fails

Computer had a episode and is limping along with various symptoms:
*Playing sound does not work (no audio device) but Windows sounds okay.
*Svchost errors
*At least one web site (www.dailykitten.com) croaks with:

"Internet Explorer has encountered a problem... The following add-on was
running when this problem occurred:
File: mshtml.dll

*Google toolbar is does not appear even though checked in the "Toolbars"
drop-down.
*"Favorites" are not current
*"My Computer" says various network drives are "disconnected network drives"
even though clicking on them brings up their directories and they can be
accessed with no problem.

Well, since this seemed too much to fix one-by-one, I attempted a system
restore.

System Restore fails with message:

"System Restore has encountered a problem..."

Debug (C++) yields offending instruction message as:

"Unhandled exception in rstrui.exe (MSHTML.DLL). Access violation."

Suggestions earnestly solicited.

Re: System Restore fails

Hi,

Try running System Restore in Safe Mode.

1. Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup to
start your computer in Safe Mode or Safe Mode with a command prompt.
2. Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account
that has administrator credentials.
3. In Safe Mode type or paste the following command in the Start - Run box
then press Enter. In Safe Mode Command Prompt type the following command then
press ENTER.
4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer
to an earlier state, or undo the last restore if available.
