Safer desktop

Hi all, I want to set up an account on my computer for my 10 year old
grandaughter to use, give her her own desktop etc. While I don't want to make
it impossible for her to use searhes etc I am concerned about those searches
might return. I know I've been surprised a few times. How do I set it up so
she can go to webkins, disney etc without me having to worry about what might
pop-up?

Thanks in advance for any insights....

Re: Safer desktop

Steve,

There are applications like Net Nanny (http://www.netnanny.com/) etc which will
take care of that type of searching. Be careful as some of these software
packages are rogues

Some routers have word filtering too where you can add the obvious words

Firewall will also allow you to filter things

ISPs like AOL use ratings so if you use that then it can be controlled

Use the firewall to block IM ports if you need to go that far

Honestly, most kids these days already know what sites to avoid. If they
dont, then teach them.

Re: Safer desktop

I use Norton Internet Security which has a 'parental control' feature that
can be turned on/off. I don't know if it's the best around but it has a list
of blocked websites (that's continually updated). I just make sure it's
switched on when my nieces and nephews come over.

Google has some options on filtering search returns also. I think most
search pages probably do.
