What would cause a file I'm saving give me a message, "Windows cannot save
the file because..." (the window is not large enough to read the rest of the
sentence).

If I do Save As... I travel to the directory and the file is no longer
listed where it usually is, but is replaced by a .tmp file of the same size.

Because the little Save As window that travels with the document has the
correct name, I can save, but only via Save As.

Can this be corrected somehow?

Maybe you should describe exactly what you are doing, file type you are
saving etc.

Windows is telling you the reason. Maybe you could reduce your font so you
can see the message.

Have you tried saving to another location.

Office 97 often fails to get properly registered in the registry when
installed on XP. The "...document is already open, do you want to make a
copy message" only occurs in this case when a document is opened via
association (i.e., through Explorer, or Recently Opened Documents) and
doesn't happen if Word is already open (for example, if you open a document
through Word, File - Open; or by association with Word already running).

Office XP....

For Word: Go to Start/Run and type in: winword /r
For Excel: Go to Start/Run and type in: excel /regserver
For PowerPoint: Start/Run and type in: powerpnt /regserver
For Access:Go to Start/Run and type in: msaccess /regserver

I am in Windows XP Pro SP2 Version 2002.
My Office is 2000 Pro, so not sure how Office 97 relates to this.
However, the program where this occurs was built to run in windows, and you
have given me a good idea about registering.

Canvas seldom crashes, but when it does, the event ID is usually app compat.
And I do often open its files as you are describing sometimes.

I have used both Windows, Office, and the other program since about forever.
It's possible there is some old Office 97 piece still lurking around. The
program is Deneba's Canvas, technical illustrations, graphics, and photo
editing, now owned by ACD Systems of America, Inc. I think I'll go over
there and see what they have to say. They may have a special protocol about
registering their program (if that is what is wrong).
