Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer--mouse freeze ups

My Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer mouse occasionally stops working.
For example, when I'm reading posts using Forte Agent, the cursor
stops responding and stays in one location. While the cursor is
frozen, I can navigate using the keyboard, reboot, then the mouse
starts working again. I downloaded the latest Intellimouse driver
utility from Microsoft, but the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer is not
listed. I tried a few models anyway, but it still freezes up. I
installed the original mouse driver (the CD that came with the mouse)
and I still get lockups, but not as frequent. This mouse is about 5
years old and I like it (when it is working). I'm running Win XP
Home version 2002, SP 2, 1 GB RAM, AMD Athlon 64 CPU 3500+ 2.21 GHz.
Any troubleshooting ideas? Thanks

Re: Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer--mouse freeze ups

It might be time for a new mouse, they don't last forever. 5 years is a
pretty darn good run for a mouse! I use Intellimouse Wheel mice and I
don't think I ever got that long a run from any of them.

Re: Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer--mouse freeze ups

I was afraid of that; didn't realize there was a "lifespan" for an
optical mouse unless the buttons, wheel or cord wore out. I'll
probably upgrade to a (cordless) Logitech mouse.

Does unplugging it and plugging it back in make it work again? You may
have a broken wire that loses contact occasionally.

Re: Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer--mouse freeze ups

Well, you might want to completely remove any mouse software and drivers
and try reinstalling the Intellimouse drivers to see if it makes any
difference.

The Microsoft mouse pointer moves erratically or does not respond when
you use a Microsoft pointing device

I had the same problem on a brand new computer - replaced mouse and all
OK - mouse was clearly faulty.
