WinXP Pro shutdown message "End program - WMS idle"

Hello All,

How can I fix the "End program - WMS idle" message when shutting down
WinXP Pro?

When I shut down WinXP Pro SP2 I receive the above message. Googling
I've found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921113 however it appears to
apply to Contact Manager 2005. I do have the Contact Manager installed
with Office Professional 2003, so I'm not sure this applies. Any
ideals? TIA!

Re: WinXP Pro shutdown message "End program - WMS idle"

What version of MS Office is installed (if any)?

Is a Norton application (e.g., NAV; NSW; NIS) installed?

See above quote from original message.

>Is a Norton application (e.g., NAV; NSW; NIS) installed?

I've got Ghost and Winfax still installed from Systemworks 2002, however
I haven't had any problems until installing Office Professional 2003
with the contact manager.

Since the URL http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921113 seems to apply to
contact manager 2005 per "921348
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921348/) Description of the
Communicator 2005 hotfix package: July 18, 2006", I thought that I'd
inquire before apply any hotfix.

TIA!

Check your background program. Something in there is creating this

Well if you have it installed but without the suggested Hotfix it is very
likely that the KB applies to you. What makes you think it isn't?

Crossposted to microsoft.public.office.communicator newsgroup.

Sorry, in my haste (probably) I read your original post as "I do NOT have
the Contact Manager installed...".

921113 makes no mention of Contact Manager or Office 2003: Do you have MS
Office Communicator 2005 installed as well?

RE: WinXP Pro shutdown message "End program - WMS idle"

That article doesn't mention Contact Manager at all...it applies to
Communicator 2005. When you shut down Outlook before shutting down Windows,
go to the Task Manager and look at the list of processes (not applications)
that are running. If OUTLOOK.EXE is still running, something else is keeping
it open...most likely some kind of add-in. Try disabling your add-ins and
reenable them one by one to see if one of them is the culprit. It could also
be some other 3rd party program that interacts with Outlook in some way that
is keeping Outlook open.

RE: WinXP Pro shutdown message "End program - WMS idle"

I get the "end program - wms idle" message every time I shut windows down. I
don not have communicator 2005 on my system. What else could be causing this
error message?

My answer to Greg would apply to you too, since he doesn't have Communicator

RE: WinXP Pro shutdown message "End program - WMS idle"

I have a client who has this problem on a new workstation. It turned out to
be Microsoft Desktop Search that was causing the problem. I found a post on
another forum that documented the same problem with Google Desktop as well.

RE: WinXP Pro shutdown message "End program - WMS idle"

I was able to prevent the problem by modifying the search list Desktop Search
uses to index. It was indexing all of the other profiles on the local drive
and the Windows subdirectory of his own profile. Once I excluded the other
profiles and the later folder (and it's child objects) I was able to log
off/reboot/shutdown without issue.

On a side note I noticed that Desktop Search has also started indexing
Outlook Express even though he didn't use it. Since it was installed with
the OS and he didn't need it indexed I uninstalled it. I'm not sure if it
was a catalyst as well, but I doubt it.

I had another cause which was corrected by correcting the 'StartUp' tab
of 'MSConfig'. Uncheck 'NMBgMonitor', reboot, and check no notification
option on reboot. I found this by Googling and in the last message
posted in this thread
http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/...ad.php?t=26253.

work. I also tried some renegade solutions which also did not work. Help!
