Delete Old Java Before Intsll New Version?

The Sun web site says not to delete older versions of the Java Runtime
Environment (I currently have version 1.4.1.02 on my XP system) before
installing a later version (I want to install Version 1.6 -2, the latest
version), but I've seen others post that you should delete the older
version before installing a newer one. Advice, anyone?

When Java installs a new version, it does not uninstall the old version,
but it does set things up in your browsers to use the new version
(assuming that you've enabled Java in the browsers).

I have seen the advice to uninstall first, but I've never had a problem
installing the upgrade and then uninstalling the older version. BTW,
uninstall -- don't "delete."

Re: Delete Old Java Before Intsll New Version?

1. Uninstall /all/ JRE versions via Add/Remove Programs and reboot.

2. Delete C:\Program Files\Java <=this folder, if found. Do NOT delete
C:\Program Files\JavaVM <=this folder, if found!

3. Download the Windows Offline Installation file for, e.g., jre 1.6.0_02,
saving it to your desktop.

4. Close all browser windows and install.

Re: Delete Old Java Before Intsll New Version?

I've been told that this advice has been given elsewhere. Is it correct? TIA

There is a new update for the Java SE Runtime Environment. It corrects some
issues with IE7 and Vista\IE7

The Update version is jre 1.6.0_02 Update

****Important NOTE****

The previous version of jre 1.6.0_01 should be Deleted from the Control
Panel\Add\Remove and also from the

%windir%\Program Files since it can cause issues at times with the affected
apps that call on it..

When done all that needs to show in Control Panel and %windir%\Program Files
is the following

Java (TM) 6 Update 2
Java (TM) SE Runtime Environment 6

Re: Delete Old Java Before Intsll New Version?

When you say "delete", I suppose that you mean "uninstall", don't you?

Re: Delete Old Java Before Intsll New Version?

I will do it. Each one of the old versions take almost a quarter of
gigabyte on your hard disk. Please "uninstall" them, do not "delete"
them.

If you are very cautious wait until after you have a clean install of the
new version. The main thing is not to have two versions installed at the
same time to avoid conflicts and to save disk space. Make sure you install
build 6 of the update 2 which is available here :
https://sdlc5c.sun.com/ECom/EComActi...E41D4286F6315F
or possibly at java.com also by now.
