microsoft word opens up painfully slow why?

A few days ago I had some problems with a Roxio product. The tech took me
through slew of trouble shooting hoops. One of which screwed up my Internet
explorer. I have since downloaded a fix and I am operating fine except for a
bizarre new thing of Microsoft Word taking over 10 minutes to open up. This
NEVER happened before. Once it opens I go to select a file I recently used
and it too takes an excruciating amount of time to open. Some files don't
even open.

Background of what I have:
Windows XP
Internet Explorer 7
under the add and remove programs . . .
WORD 2000
Microsoft Office 2000 premium
Microsoft compression client pack 1.0 for windows XP

What is wrong with my Microsoft word - struggling to open??

Your advice is most appreciated.

Thank you

Anecdotal reports suggest that installing either Windows Media Player 11 or
Internet Explorer 7 breaks Roxio CD Creator.

If it's CD writing you need, I'd ditch it and get Nero. Or Deepburner.

Your problems might be best solved by way of a System Restore, provided
there is one that goes back before the trouble started.

Other thing to check is if the software installs some kind of Office plugin.
(ususally totally needless, and puts some kind of menu button directly into
Word, etc) Often these, when present, cause trouble.

Oh, and best stop using Internet Explorer. It's VERY insecure. Get Firefox
instead.

But, if you really must have this Roxio software, then it looks like you
must stick to older versions of IE and WMP.

RE: microsoft word opens up painfully slow why?

Unfortunately I just purchased Roxio. I am told that I need a new graphics
card in order to make my CD burner work with Roxio. So . get the graphics
card or NERO? Do you know what NERO costs?

By doing a "system restore" are you implying that my micro soft word will
then work properly?

Having my word work properly is my MAIN CONCERN.

Yes . .I try not to use Internet Explorer. I have Mozzila installed and use
this mostly.

Thank you for all your help. I'm so glad I fund this message board.

RE: microsoft word opens up painfully slow why?

I'm told that an up to date graphics card would solve my problem with
burning CD's . Unfortunately I just purchase the upgrade of Roxio thinking
it would solve my problems. Maybe?? What does NERO cost?

Having WORD work is my main concern. with a system restore will I disrupt
anything else? I need this working properly ASAP.

Yes about internet explore. I have mozilla and try to use this mostly.

Many thanks to you. you are very knowledgeable!

Re: microsoft word opens up painfully slow why?

there is likely insufficient
resources for word, so it is
grasping for air, per se,
after you installed roxio.

one way to analyze word is that it
can run in both normal mode
and safemode. so booting into safemode
and seeing if word runs lickity split would
be a clue for analyzing the problem.

and yet another would be to uninstall
roxio and see if the problem with word
is resolved.

notwithstanding, you might want
to simply reinstall word with
your word cd or repair it if the option
exists to "detect and repair".

however, if word is still
sluggish then there are two
other factors that impose
on it's performance:

1) low on virtual memory and
2) low real memory, i.e. ram

-----------------------

1) increase the size of virtual memory.

if it is set to auto, then change it to custom
size and use a min / initial size of 2 and
a max size that is approx 2.5 times the size of
your physical ram. hopefully you have
a minimum of 512 megs of ram installed, therefore
the max should be set at around 1152.

2) secondly, use a this freeware to
flush out the physical memory regularly:
