| Problems with Windows Defender Hi!, I just installed my windows XP and wanted to use Windows Defender as antivirus software, then after installing the Security system of XP kept telling me that I needed an antivirus and my system is at risk, then I thought that Windows Defender wasn´t actually a real time antivirus but a secondary program so I installed Nod32 and Windows stopped telling my system is at risk, but the thing my system, though still relatively operational, got very slow and unstable, I noticed windows Defender introduced in the msconfig start tab, a program and then checked to unselect it, but i can still see some process associated with Windows Defender in my Taskbar everytime I load my PC, I tryied configuring Windows defender to not ve active all the time but nothing happened, what should I do? should I uninstall Windows Defender and keep nod32 or uninstall nod32 and keep Windos Defender although the security center keeps warning me I don´t have an antivirus? or maybe I should keep both with some kind of configuration?? Pleas Help, Thanks! |

| Re: Problems with Windows Defender Windows Defender is not an antivirus program--it is more like a spyware program such AdAware and both an AV and a spyware type of program are needed. Defender is designed to run in the background. Since your computer started acting up after Nod32 was installed, it seems reasonable to suspect that it and not Defender is your problem. Try uninstalling Nod and see if that cures the problem. If so, reinstall it with all other programs closed. If it continues to give you problems, contact the maker or try a different AV program. -- Regards Ron Badour MS MVP 1997 - 2007 "Tomas" <Tomas@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:429DB28B-80D8-4AD5-9984-7E5CA80112A4@microsoft.com... > Hi!, I just installed my windows XP and wanted to use Windows Defender as > antivirus software, then after installing the Security system of XP kept > telling me that I needed an antivirus and my system is at risk, then I > thought that Windows Defender wasn´t actually a real time antivirus but a > secondary program so I installed Nod32 and Windows stopped telling my > system > is at risk, but the thing my system, though still relatively operational, > got > very slow and unstable, I noticed windows Defender introduced in the > msconfig > start tab, a program and then checked to unselect it, but i can still see > some process associated with Windows Defender in my Taskbar everytime I > load > my PC, I tryied configuring Windows defender to not ve active all the time > but nothing happened, what should I do? should I uninstall Windows > Defender > and keep nod32 or uninstall nod32 and keep Windos Defender although the > security center keeps warning me I don´t have an antivirus? or maybe I > should > keep both with some kind of configuration?? That's not what it is. Windows Defender is an anti-spyware program. You need separate anti-virus software. > then after installing the Security system of XP kept > telling me that I needed an antivirus and my system is at risk, Exactly! > then I > thought that Windows Defender wasn´t actually a real time antivirus but a > secondary program Not any kind of anti-virus program. > so I installed Nod32 and Windows stopped telling my system > is at risk, Correct. > but the thing my system, though still relatively operational, got > very slow and unstable, Sorry, I don't know why. I've heard good things about NOD32, but haven't used it myself. > I noticed windows Defender introduced in the msconfig > start tab, a program and then checked to unselect it, No, don't do this--at least not unless you replace it with other anti-spyware software. You need both kinds of products. > but i can still see > some process associated with Windows Defender in my Taskbar everytime I load > my PC, I tryied configuring Windows defender to not ve active all the time > but nothing happened, what should I do? should I uninstall Windows Defender > and keep nod32 or uninstall nod32 and keep Windos Defender although the > security center keeps warning me I don´t have an antivirus? or maybe I should > keep both with some kind of configuration??
