Text correction gone MAD!!!!

I can't help but think this is a WINDOWS problem other than anything
else, as it occurs in ANYTHING I type whether I'm typing in WORD, or
Thunderbird email, or a description on EBAY while in Firefox or Internet
Explorer.
I'm typing along and I look up to see a correction screen that says
"check spelling", and then sometimes I get a suggestion screen where the
last few words I've typed appear as a replacement for a word it found
mis-spelled 3 paragraphs ago.
It's driving me batty.
I've changed every setting in my browsers, Word and the email program
and nothing helps. Since it applies to everything, is there some strange
setting in XP that does this?
This began after one of those irritating "updates" they find, it seems
everyday.
I've wondered if it was a virus, but I scan for them daily, using
RoadRunners ETRUST system.
Can anyone think of a solution???????......joe

Re: Text correction gone MAD!!!!

Hello,

If you are getting the check spelling option in every textbox/textarea in
every program, then it is most likely a 3rd party software.

Look in your system tray (bottom right) for any spelling software you might
have installed. Check in add/remove programs in control panel as well.

Re: Text correction gone MAD!!!!

Thanks, but I don't have any software like that. I pretty well computer
savvy and actually was pretty active on these boards helping people back
in the Win 95 and 98 days. My Word program is 2003 and have used it
right along with no problems. I had to reformat, reinstall a few months
back and since I've let the system update all the security things, as
well as the service packs. If anything I have less software now than
before, but cannot find tge root of this problem........joe

Re: Text correction gone MAD!!!!

SingaporeWebDesign is most likely correct with his assumption.
You now need to track down the culprit. Here is a way:
- Disconnect the machine from the Internet.
- Run msconfig.exe.
- Untick every task under the Startup tab.
- Reboot the machine and check if the problem persists.
- Put the ticks back one or two at a time until you find the offending
application.
- Ask yourself how it could establish itself on your machine.
