"the following updates were not installed"

That is the error message for ANY update I try to install. And there are at
least 75 of them waiting.

I have gone through and deleted the contents of the
c:\windows\softwaredistribution folder.

I have checked on several registry entries. I have registered some DLLs as
described by several chats I have searched on the web, but no luck.

Any suggestions on where to start or what may be causing this?

thanks

Nate

Re: "the following updates were not installed"

On the WU Website, select your history of updates - now click on failed update (red mark)
and see if there is an error code.
If there is an error code, write it down and post in the Windows Update Newsgroup.

You cannot install updates that you download from the Windows Update Web site on a Windows
XP-based computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=934648

You Cannot Install Some Updates or Programs
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

How to view the Update log in Windows:-

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type: %windir%\windowsupdate.log
and then click OK.

Scroll down towards the bottom for the latest entries to locate the error code(s)
associated with the latest failed attempt to download/install. If appropriate copy and
paste the error codes into a new thread in the Windows Update Newsgroup so someone there
can
assist you. On the other hand, you may be able to find the error code and other
suggestions by searching the Windows Update Newsgroup.

Also check Windows folder for file called KB******.log (****** = number of update ie
KB896688) and post the contents of the failed update.
This may provide further clues as to why the update failed.

How to read the Windowsupdate.log file:

I suggest you look through the posts in and if needed post to the experts in
the Windows Update newsgroup.
