In general, the restoration capability will depend on what backup program you use. Most backup software will let you do selective restoration, but if you are talking about *software* restoration in particular, you will generally *not* be able to do this. That's because the software program is not just a single file or files, but will also have entries referring to and pointing to it in the registry and elsewhere. The restoration software won't have the capability of selectively restoring the registry or finding those other entries. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Please Reply to the Newsgroup |

What do you mean by selective software restoration? Do you mean restoring an installed program that was backed up? For very simple programs that only have a couple of files in a program folder, yes it can be done, but In general for most programs it can't. Most backup software doesn't have a selection to restore an installed software program. Installation of a program involves writing changes to the registry copying the program files to a program folder, and often times placing files in various other locations. There is no way a backup program can know what all is involved to restore a particular program. If this doesn't cover your question, then post back with more details. -- Rock [MS-MVP User/Shell] |
