| Unresponsive button.............. ive been scouring the net for help on this guys. it woudl be great if anyone knew how to help me. backstory; ive been using this computer setup with no hardware change for a long time. i keep my comp clean both on a hardware and on a software level with knowledge of what belongs on my computer and what doesnt. recently ive encountered a problem where my computer becomes unresponsive when i attempt to shutdown. let me give you guys an exact description of the problem and some things ive noted in an attempt to solve this. 1. i disabled the welcome and xp style log in screen a long time ago. my xp requires the user to put in a username and password into a rectangle dialog box in order to enter xp. on top of that, the user must press ctrl alt and delete at the same time in order to even begin typing in the username and password. 2. once i am in xp if i want to shut down, i go to start menu and click the shut down button once. the computer immediately becomes unresponsive. the mouse can be moved, the task manager can be brought up but once the task manager is quit, a "image" of th e task manager stays frozen on the screen. i checked the tasks repeatedly and there are no running tasks, i've even gone as far as to eliminate every task on the list starting from number 34 and down to around the 12-20 crucial tasks that can't be ended. still no dice. 3. if i end explorer.exe, and restart it, i gain full use of the computer again but any attempt to shut down as described above will cause the same situation to occur. 4. if i press ctrl alt delete and click the "shut down..." button in the Windows Security box that pops up, the computer becomes unresponsive like above, mouse movable, but the task manager won't even come up if you try it this way. 5. if i log off and go to the screen that pops up when i first turn on my computer and attempt to shut down from the button on that screen, it also becomes unresponsive. 6. once the computer becomes unresponsive in any of the situations, it always becomes responsive about four minutes later but the results vary. it becomes responsive and throws me back to xp as if i never touched the button. 7. following microsoft knowledge base insturctions, i went to go check if i could shut down in safe mode. that is a positive, i can shut down in safe mode. microsoft says its a driver problem but i've made checks on my drivers and havent installed anything new recently. 8. i checked my bios and my settings are the same as they were for months already. since i cant get to the selection box at all its safe to say i cant even restart the computer i believe because i cant even get to the choice selection box. any help would be appreciated! |
