i posted a question a couple hours ago named "Password" microsoft emailed me
letting me know someone repllied but i never got the email and i dont no
where to check it. If anyone knows how to fix my problem...My daughter made a
password on the administrator account and forgot the password. there are no
other accounts on the computer so theres no way to do anything. If anyone can
help me, personally email me at cashlee@comcast.net.

Go to http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/ . There you will find
zip files that will let you create boot floppy disks or bootable CDs
that will enable you to reset any system password on an NT class
operating system (Win2000, XP and Vista are all NT class operating system).

Two tips:
1. Please be aware that it is VERY BAD PRACTICE to use the built-in
Administrator account on a day-to-day basis and as your only account on the
computer. If the account gets corrupted, as it may well do, then your ONLY
way into the machine is by doing a repair install of XP. set up a User
account and give that Admin rights for daily use, leaving the built-in
Administrator account for emergency access only.

2. You probably don't realise it but you are actually looking at a global
Usenet newsgroup, not a web-based "forum". the web access to these
newsgroups is probably the worst way you can access them. Try using a news
reader instaed and you will instantly find everything is far far better!

If you can't find a post search for it using Google Groups Advanced Search.
Search for your name as author, this newsgroup is
microsoft.public.windowsxp.general.

I replied in detail to your first post.

Better yet use a newsreader to access what are actually Usenet newsgroups
instead of the awful web interface. XP comes with Outlook Express. Here is
a link with info on how to set it up.

The advice about using "newsreader", and especially Oulook Express,
has been seen on this forum any number of times.
I have been unable to use OE for newsgroups through my LAN (so-called
broadband), though I can access through dial-up. After mkuch prolonged
correspondence (through email) with the LAN ISP company ("Sify"),
during which I was given a lot of irrelevant and nonsensical advice,
ultimately Sify "signed off" sahing they "don't support newsgroups".
Here in India, one doesn't have much choice of ISPs, and I can ill
afford to experiment with others. In the circumstances, I am reading
messages of this forum using the "feeds reader" in Opera browser. I
have also installed the free program FeedReader3, but it does not
appear to be better than the Opera utility for my purpose.
I shall be thankful for more suggestions on this.

I suspect that Cambria isn't seeing any of these replies. She stated,
"microsoft emailed me letting me know someone repllied but i never got
the email and i dont no where to check it." I would imagine she is
expecting her replies to arrive in the form of e-mails. I will e-mail
her a link to the thread; hopefully this will work!

Outlook Express is usually suggested as a newsreader, not necessarily
because it's the best choice. but because it's a very easy one to get
started with, since it comes with Windows and you already have it. You
might later want to switch to another product if you find that it

Your ISP, and what they support, doesn't matter with the Microsoft
newsgroups. Although some ISPs provide a wide range of newsgroups,
including the Microsoft ones, you can also get the newsgroups directly
from the Microsoft server. So even though your ISP doesn't provide a
server, you can still get these groups. Just point your newsreader at
the news server msnews.microsoft.com. See

I know, it's a vicious loop. The web interface has been particularly on the
fritz these past couple of days, but maybe she'll see it somehow, and
hopefully it will help either the OP or others who see it.

Thanks for the suggestions, I already have set up OE as per the link.
It works if I use dial-up, but fails with my LAN. For demonstration,
here below is the error message when I tried to download messages from
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlooke xpress

Configuration:
Account: msnews
Server: msnews.microsoft.com
Protocol: NNTP
Port: 119
Secure(SSL): 0
Code: 800ccc0e
If I use dial-up ["Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd", phone No:172231],
there is no problem: I have just now downloaded the titles of 297
messages [in the right hand panel of OE}, with the info on the status
bar "5237 not downloaded". but, needless to say, dial-up is very much
slower, and I have to pay for the phone calls.
As I wrote earlier, my LAN provider has said they "don't support
newsgroups".

Thank you for your detailed advice.
Please see my reply to Gordon, in which I inadvertently omitted to
thank you also.
The problem I am facing is in using "msnews.microsoft.com" in OE, and
trying to connect using my LAN ["sify Broadband"]. Even for setting up
the "msnews.microsoft.com" account in OE, I had to use dial-up. As I
had explained, I can download the titles and open the messages using
dial-up, but not with LAN, which fails to connect. The company that
provides the LAN connection has informed me they "don't support
newsgroups".
I don't consider this as a very serious problem, because I am able to
get by with the feeds reader in Opera browser. The only trouble seems
to be, I don't know how to cross-post through Opera's feeds reader.
In view of the above, I suggest that this thread may be terminated as
far as it concerns my specific problem.

I'm unclear as to what you mean here. Are you saying you believe you
need to be online with your dial-up ISP in order to set up your
msnews.microsoft.com newsgroup? If so, this is incorrect; you can be
offline and still set it up.

What happens when you click on:

Tools | Accounts | News tab ?

Do you see msnews.microsoft.com listen under the Account column? If so,
what does it say under the Connection column? And if you double-click on
msnews.microsoft.com, what is all the information in each of the tabs
(General, Connection, Server, Advanced)? My guess is one of these
settings needs to be tweaked so you can access this news server when you
are online with sify. Specifically:

Connection | Always connect using...

I'm sure what they mean is that they don't offer Usenet service (i.e.,
their own news server).
