Is there any way to insert or mount a jpg image on the desktop? I
don't want to fill in the whole background, just a picture about two
or three times the size the icons.

yes by using active desktop

right click on the desktop>properties>Desktop (tab)> customize
desktop(button)>Web (tab)
Press NEW and then BROWSE for your picture....
after pressing apply the image will be inserted inside your desktop... you
can then move it around and resize it.

Tiberius,
I am able to put the jpg image in the desktop, but not to resize it or
move it. Mouse-drag, with or without shift doesn't budge it. I'll keep
trying things, probably tomorrow, and report.

if you place the cursor to the edge of the image then a gray frame emerges

from that frame you can resize and move the image around see image:

Right click desktop > Arrange Icons By > Make sure "Lock web items .. " is unchecked.
