Standard 32bit XP can handle up to 4GB but not all of that is seen by the OS, some is used by hardware. 64bit XP can handle up to 128 GB. -- Rock [MS-MVP User/Shell] |

Any 32-bit system has an address space of 2**32=4GB. But you won't be able to see and use the entire 4GB. See http://members.cox.net/slatteryt/RAM.html for a discussion. There is a 64-bit version of WinXP, as well as several 64-bit versions of Vista. These systems can use much more than 4GB RAM, currently their limit is something like 128GB, I believe. Full 64-bit addressing would allow vastly more space. -- Tim Slattery MS MVP(DTS) Slattery_T@bls.gov http://members.cox.net/slatteryt |

You are both right. 32-bit XP can use up to 4GB, 64-bit XP up to 128GB. *However*, note that that 4GB number is very misleading. There is a 4GB address space, but some of it is used by hardware devices and isn't available to Windows. In practice, even if you install 4GB, you get at most a little over 3GB of usable RAM. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Please Reply to the Newsgroup |
