Windows XP and codec problems

Windows Media player 9, 10, 11 don't work. Only sound, no video (black
screen) when playing any video format file.

I tried to play *.wmv video files in the WMP but it does not work. On the
other hand, RealPlayer is playing all formats without any problem.

The file I played is:
Title: Windows Movie Maker 2 Sample File.WMV (which was on the recovery cd)
Video codec: Windows Media Video 9 ( I checked the codec via WMP)

The video codec wmv9vcm.dll (version 9.0.1.369) is located in
C:\Windows\system32\ . This dll subroutine is definitely present with a whole
bunch of other codecs.

If I play the Windows Movie Maker 2 Sample File.WMV file then there is only
sound but no video at all. It looks like there is a problems between WMP11
(and also 9 before) and the codecs.

Has Windows XP anything to do with this problem??
All ActiveX components are enabled. That shouldn't be a problem.

Any idea what is going on?

regards

In WMP do you have the file type selected?
Menu bar > Tools > Options > File Types tab.

Re: Windows XP and codec problems

It sounds like you dont have the correct codecs downloaded.

XP is rubbish at finding the correct ones.I believe that there is some legal
reason why the correct ones can't be included in windows.

Look for DivX Codecs, NimoLitePack and xvid codecs. Once installed, you then
should be able to view the video and sound.
