Windows Vista Home Premium

Hi,

Where can I post a question regarding Windows Vista Home Premium?

I believe that my question is simple . . .

Does Windows Vista Home Premium software have a partitioning utility?

I wish to partition a 320GB drive and Norton PartitionMagic is not
compatible (according to Prashanta.Kumar of their tech support department in
some other country).

Thanks,

Grant

Hi Grant,

Vista Home Premium does not have a partitioning application that can be used
from the desktop but, just like Windows XP you can partition your hard
drives when you perform the initial install and should also be able
partition other connected drives using the same procedure even after
installing the OS although it will destroy all data on the drive in
question.

Hope this helps

Andy

It is best to view and post to those newsgroups via your news reader
program. That way you don't have to register with Microsoft's Passport
program.

No and it never will.
If you wish to save money and willing to use your brain a little, do
this: download the Linux rescue cd from:
http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Syste...e-CD-188.shtml
burn the iso and boot from it, selecting all the defaults by pressing
enter. you know you are done when you get a message about mounting ntfs.
type startx at he prompt.
when x windows opens, close the automatically opened terminal
right click and select gparted
after few seconds yo will see a the gnome partition editor
you should see you hd there.
you can choose to resize, create partitions, what ever.
nothing happens until you click apply. you can always UNDO BEFORE you
click apply.
when done, close it and at the desktop right click and select exit
at the prompt reboot, and the cd light comes up you can eject the bootable
cd.
The utility is also great for making copies of you partition to an external
drive right before your next upgrade...:) just in case you want to go
completely back.
Let me know if you need help.

<snip>

This statement is not quite accurate. Disregarding the semantics of what
defines a utility, Vista does have a greater ability than XP to manage and
manipulate partitions. It certainly is not as robust as a full purpose
partitioning utility, but it does do some things.

You certainly didn't need to crosspost to all those XP newsgroups.

Vista, like XP can partition a drive during the installation process. Also
it has more capability than XP after Vista is installed for partitioning
including shrinking a drive, creating an extended partition, and expanding a
drive, but there are limitations to it. For example to add free space to a
volume that free space has to reside to the right of that volume, and Vista
has no means to move that free space or to move a volume.

Acronis Disk Director Suite 10 works fine in Vista, as does BootIT NG from
Terabyte Unlimited.

Here is a list of Vista specific newsgroups.
microsoft.public.windows.vista.administration_acco unts_password
microsoft.public.windows.vista.file_management
microsoft.public.windows.vista.games
microsoft.public.windows.vista.general
microsoft.public.windows.vista.hardware_assessment
microsoft.public.windows.vista.hardware_devices
microsoft.public.windows.vista.installation_setup
microsoft.public.windows.vista.mail
microsoft.public.windows.vista.music_pictures_vide o
microsoft.public.windows.vista.networking_sharing
microsoft.public.windows.vista.performance_mainten ance
microsoft.public.windows.vista.print_fax_scan
microsoft.public.windows.vista.security

installation_setup or the general newsgroup would have been good places for
this question.

The statement is very accurate. Better then XP means from nothing to
something (greater ability..wow). Let's call the baby by it's name.
Windows has no partition manipulation utulity, period. Linux has a more
then one built in, and more (see Gparted and partimage for backing up a
partition).
The problem is the being an MVP does not allow you to admit, just try
and protect.
By the way, even the boot sector utility in Vista is screwed up.

What you say is not accurate. I explained why. What Linux has or doesn't
have is irrelevant to the inaccuracy of what you say. You can try to dance
around it but the fact is Vista does have some ability to manage partitions.
There are limitations to the features, but it's there.

Also the comment about the boot sector utility, whatever it is you mean, is
not relevant to the original purpose of this post.

It's clear your desire to bash clouds your understanding.

Re: Windows Vista Home Premium

Thank you for your recommendation, Mike.

I did visit the ACRONIS website and discovered that one page states DD10 is
supported, another says nothing about VISTA. Accordingly, I emailed ACRONIS
asking for confirmation and or clarification. I will post their reply once
received.

Till then, thanks again!!

Grant
