Windows XP cannot create system restore point (disappears hours later) 2007

I bought a pc in January this year, with XP Pro SP2 (2002) and as of
April, all my restore points created by the computer, during software
installations or otherwise, have disappeared. I did install Norton
2007 "Internet Security" software then. This particuar Norton does
NOT come with the GoBack as some do - - I've been told having GoBack
will have an effect on the Windows system restore features. I am
concerned as to why my system restore is not functioning; when I
manually create a restore point, and check the control panel just
hours later to verify my restore point, it is gone. There is
NOTHING. No restore points available from when I bought the pc until
now. How do I fix this? Queries into this online show answers from
several years ago... such as disable the system restore/restart/re-
enable it, or check for online updates, which I did, and which the
computer does automatically at 3am, and quite often (after which I
should be seeing a system restore point available for those moments,
but do not). I have the XP Pro disk which came with the pc, but am
not sure what to do with it; the store I bought the pc from actually
said not to touch it. Any suggestions? I'd rather know my OS was
working properly before buying a copy of Norton Goback....

I'm not sure where in the Control Panel you're looking to "verify" your
restore point. If you want to see what RPs are available, go to Start >
All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore to open the
System Restore "Wizard" and then click on "Restore my computer to an
earlier time" and click "Next." You should see a calendar showing
restore points in bold face type.

Your problem is probably related to the use of Norton Internet Security.

Trying this route shows the same results as hitting the "help and
support" button in my start menu (they lead me to the same prompts).
Still having restore points "vanish." Will look further into the
Norton issue (which sometimes tells me there was an error in Norton,
and my virus protection is not on... alas, hope I don't have "malware"
which I am learning about)
