Hi,

I have a Linux machine that I want to convert to an XP machine. What
would be the least expensive way or source to acquire a copy of XP?

Full version of Home Edition with SP2 is about $180-$200, with Professional
running around $100 more than that.

If you have a qualifying product (such as Windows 98) already, then you can
get a Home Edition upgrade for about $100 or Professional Edition upgrade
for about $200. You can check your upgrade eligibility here:

While these prices are just guidelines for what I see at legit sites,
anything significantly less probably isn't a legitimate copy.

And even if you don't already own a qualifying version, you can usually buy
a used copy of Windows 98 very cheaply. Since that's a legitimate way to
qualify for the upgrade version, and since the combination of Windows 98 and
an Upgrade version of XP will almost certainly cost much less than a Full
version, it hardly ever makes any economic sense to buy a Full version.

One additional point: OEM versions are also widely available at low prices,
and some people confuse them with the Full version. I almost recommend
against buying an OEM version, since it comes with several restrictions, the
most severe of which is that once installed on one computer, it can never be
legitimately installed on another.

Buy the version of your choice from your favorite discount software
retailer. If you own the CD for a qualifying product such as Win98/95/ME/ I
recommend getting the retail upgrade version. It's about the same as a full
OEM, but does not have the limits on transferability.

Go to a university near you, and get a student to purchase an academic
version for you... A friend got a copy of XP Pro for $89 with his
campus ID.... MSRP was $199, Office 2003 Academic version was $129
normally $399, I didn't believe it until he showed me...

It's just not a purchase issue. The license requires you to be a student or
faculty/staff member of the academic institution to use it.

To eliminate the great disparity in pricing, one might want to consider
the adoption of single-tier pricing...that is, one price for all. As a
corollary to this concept, it would also eliminate the different versions
of the EULA since only one version would be needed to suit all.
