Microsoft Update causing cpu to run at 100%

I read a post about SVCHOST.exe taking up to 99% of CPU, there is a gentleman
named Jim Byrd whom proclaims to have the fix but I can't locate it in his
blog. Turning off Automatic update has resolved the 100% cpu usage but how do
I fix the Automatic Update?

RE: Microsoft Update causing cpu to run at 100%

Jim,

Here is a link to where Jim Byrd explains step by step how to resolve this
issue. It is long and pretty technical and you may be better off following
this other link that I will post below it. Also, I agree that turning off
Automatic updates is not a solution it is just a workaround. One quick thing
you may try is this: Taken from the third link:

Right click on my computer- expand Services and applications – click on
services – Right click on automatic updates – Properties – select disabled as
the startup type. Reboot , navigate to C:\windows\ rename the folder
SoftwareDistribution to SoftwareDistribution.old
Go back to services and set the startup type to automatic.
Reboot – failed updates should now install and CPU usage drop to normal level.

Jim Byrds resolution steps:

Good Luck,

Also see

Workaround: Change the default from Microsoft Update to Windows Update: Go
to Microsoft Update > Click on Change Settings in left pane > Scroll to
bottom of page > To Stop Using Microsoft Update > Disable Microsoft Update
software and let me use Windows Update only (check). cf.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/901037

With Windows Update as your default, you will need to check in at Office
Update to keep your Office applications fully patched:

Re: Microsoft Update causing cpu to run at 100%
