| Re: saving info from laptop to cd and then completely deleting info from computer saving your files to a different medium should not be to great of a task. you can transfer to disk or via pc to pc link or email them to yourself or upload them to a document / file repository like hotmail or yahoo or msn group. I think hotmail gives you a 1gig inbox. you can find disk wiping utilities by googling. however, there are a couple of free ones available at http://sourceforge.net/search/?type_...t&words=wiping <pam.aros******.com> wrote in message news:1177119986.754458.273400@e65g2000hsc.googlegr oups.com... | RE: saving info from laptop to cd and then completely deleting info fr Do you still have your recovery discs or Windows disc? Like db says, there are lots of ways to copy your files, but once you've copied them, the surest way to delete them is to reformat the hard drive. In the past, I've deleted all data files using a utility like System Mechanic's Incinerator and then re-installed Windows. I've even gone as far as to start a fresh install a second time, and then remove the Windows disc half way through the install (or turn off the pc half way through the re-format process with older OS) "pam.aros******.com" wrote: > I am selling my laptop..so i need to save info such word documents, my > pics, my documents, ...then i want to erase it all from the laptop so > peoople dont have my personal info..thanks..i am open to tips too. > thanks again > > |

| Re: saving info from laptop to cd and then completely deleting info from computer Hello, If your backup data is very large, I suggest putting into an external hard disk (1st choice in reliability) or CD-R/DVD-R (2nd choice). After backing up your data, use Eraser - ( http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/ ) - to do secure deletion of deleted files and clear free space. If formatting, ensure you are doing a low level formatting (i.e. not quick format) using KillDisk (free) http://www.killdisk.com/ -- Singapore Website Design http://www.bootstrike.com/Webdesign/ Singapore Web Hosting http://www.bootstrike.com/WinXP/faq.html Windows XP FAQ "db" <databaseben.discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:eh%23Eux7gHHA.1220@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl... saving your files to a different medium should not be to great of a task. you can transfer to disk or via pc to pc link or email them to yourself or upload them to a document / file repository like hotmail or yahoo or msn group. That has been gone for a number of years. |

To trash the entire drive of being recovered, the wiper utilities some have mentioned work well but often require the os still be installed to do so. It would be worth running though over any sensitive data that you have on the drive; accounts, bank info, any personal info. You could go to bootdisk.com or some such place and prepare a DOS boot disk or whatever is to your liking, and use it for format the hard drive a couple of times. You just boot from the floppy or CD, and type Format c:\ and let 'er run. A DOS format will pretty well make everything unretrievable for good on the disk. HTH Pop` |

| Re: saving info from laptop to cd and then completely deleting info from computer Hello, But its not free.. Running Killdisk 2 times (or more, tho its just zeros) is sufficient unless the buyer is going to send the drive to a recovery centre. The standard recovery software programs will fail just after one pass of Killdisk since there are no 'traces' left after Killdisk wipes the disk. -- Singapore Website Design http://www.bootstrike.com/Webdesign/ Singapore Web Hosting http://www.bootstrike.com/WinXP/faq.html Windows XP FAQ "Bruce Chambers" <bchambers@cable0ne.n3t> wrote in message news:eJoPhPDhHHA.5008@TK2MSFTNGP02.phx.gbl... > <pam.aros******.com> wrote in message > news:1177119986.754458.273400@e65g2000hsc.googlegr oups.com... >>I am selling my laptop..so i need to save info such word documents, my >> pics, my documents, ...then i want to erase it all from the laptop so >> peoople dont have my personal info..thanks..i am open to tips too. >> thanks again >> > > > > After you've saved the desired data files to removable media of your > choice, to protect your personal information and data from any future > users of average skills, you should, at the very least, format the hard > drive. If you're really paranoid backup whatever data you need, then replace the drive with a new one, and physically destroy the old drive or save it as secondary storage. -- Rock [MS-MVP User/Shell] |
