System32 folder opens on restart

A friend of mine has a situation that I can't figure out. Every time he
restarts his computer, the restart proceeds as normal, except that the
System32 folder is displayed right after the desktop icons appear. The
Common folder is also displayed. It's just a simple Windows Explorer
display of the 2 folders. He closes the 2 folders and everything appears to
be okay. This has been going on for a while and he can't think of what he
did that could have caused this. I can't even think of where a request for
the display of a folder at restart would be kept, much less what could be
causing this. Any direction or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you for your help.
