System32\SHELLNEW folder

It's been a while since I had a look at my Windows folder on my XPHome SP2
PC. Under System32 there is a folder called SHELLNEW, and all it has in it
are only a few very old MS Office document files from way before I bought the
machine secondhand.

Is it necessary to have a SHELLNEW folder?, and, can I safely remove it?

If you bought the machine secondhand, you flattened any existing system
hopefully.

Yes, if you are interested in the templates in the context menu > New.
However, that folder is located in the %windir% folder by default rather
than the %windir%\System32 folder.

As a rule of thumb, removing system folders is not a good idea at all.
