Auction and Warranty on a tablet PC

I just found out that I can't enforce the warranty protection on my
FIC Slatevision, since I purchased the item from Yahoo auction. Does
that sound like a common practice? But IBM support never bother to ask
me where I purchased my Thinkpad. The problem with my FIC slatevision
is narrow dead zone area on the edge. I hope that by posting this we
can put some pressure on FIC or other tablet PC to be more responsible
for the product they put out on the market.

There are quite a few products that I'm aware of where the warranty does not
go any further than the first purchaser. In some instances, the original
purchaser can transfer the warranty to the next person they sell it to, but
that has to be done through proper channels -- it doesn't transfer
automatically.

And in some cases, the transfer is easily done from individual to
individual, but if it goes through a reseller, the warranty is voided.

You'd probably be surprised at how many things will void a warranty.

I'm not saying that any of this is good; it's just the way it is. I doubt if
posting to a newsgroup is going to put a dent in the practice, either. You'd
be slightly more effective if you contacted FIC.

but isn't a defective product an ultimate bad PR?
perhaps FIC is more a B2B company than B2C.
that usually means bad customer support!

If you took out a full page ad in the New York Times it might be. You might
get someone's attention. But it seems that you're assuming that someone with
clout at FIC will see your post here. Personally, I doubt it, which is why I
suggested you contact the company directly. If you plead your case there,
you might get some action. You can vent your feelings here or get some
conversation going, but it's doubtful that anything you say here is going to
do you any good as far as getting your tablet repaired.

And as far as it goes, no one here can determine whether the product was
defective. The original owner could have dropped it or spilled cola into it.
That means it was damaged, not defective, and doesn't have anything to say
about whether the product itself is good or reliable. If there were a dozen
posts about the same product, that would be a different story, but one post
about one tablet bought at an auction isn't exactly a trend.

I don't know if that has anything to do with your issue. What I do know is
that if something is out of warranty, it's very, very rare that the company
will do any sort of replacement or repair. You'd have to come up with very
special circumstances and probably also find the right person to talk to, if
you expect them to do anything with a product that doesn't have a warranty.
Otherwise, they jut honor the terms of the warranty. If it's in warranty,
they fix/replace/whatever. If it's out of warranty, then it's your problem.

I really have very little opinion of the company overall. I've used their
motherboards and they were okay. I've never even seen one of their tablets.

Re: Auction and Warranty on a tablet PC

Hi,
To the best of my knowledge, FIC sold the SlateVision to resellers that were
responsible for the warranty. So you would have to know the original
reseller to get service assuming they allow the transfer of the warranty.

Re: Auction and Warranty on a tablet PC

Thank you very much for your reply.
Overall, I do like my slatevision.
I am just a bit surprised to find out how "unsupportive"
FIC can be. They didn't even bother to give me some pointers on how to
resolve the problem. Or give me an estimate on how much does it take
to fix. I doubt my tablet PC's dead zone problem is unique. They must
have a way to resolve. Why do they have to act like I stole this
tablet PC from their warehouse?
