Input panel shows only voice

A technophobe buddy bought an Acer 110 a few months back, used it a week
or two, then set it aside to learn about later. He asked me over, since
I've used one at a former employer (though mine was a Compaq.) We're
going through the manual, trying to follow point by point. We get to the
input panel and when we open it, it shows only voice recording options:
no tabs for writing, no tabs for keyboard.

I briefly look around for settings and such that might open the other
tabs, but find nothing. I'm meeting him again next week and I'm
wondering what I'm missing. On my old Compaq, I didn't do voice
recognition, mostly due to its poor performance. Did his going through
and setting it up earlier change some default settings?

Re: Input panel shows only voice

Yes, I did, and all the tools were simply about the voice. Nothing there
to select text.
